Development of lightweight and highly efficient fast neutrons composites shields based on epoxy, UHMWPE fibres and boron carbide particles

Oussama Mehelli et al.

Summary: A new hybrid composite consisting of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene fibers, epoxy, and boron carbide particles was developed for designing wearable and lightweight protective thermal neutron shields. The hybrid composite achieved both high shielding performance and overall mechanical behavior. Experimental results demonstrated the high shielding efficiency of the developed materials, with the optimal performance achieved at a B4C particle content of 10 wt%.

A comprehensive review on surface modification of UHMWPE fiber and interfacial properties

Suman Chhetri et al.

Summary: The review summarized the current state of research on surface modification of UHMWPE fiber and UHMWPE/polymer interfacial properties. Various surface modifications of UHMWPE fiber classified as 'wet' chemical and 'dry' techniques have been detailed with relevant examples. In addition, the relationship between fiber/matrix adhesion and mechanical properties of the composites has been explored. Lastly, the potential and challenges of each modification method have been discussed.

NEt3-Triggered Synthesis of UHMWPE Using Chromium Complexes Bearing Non-innocent Iminopyridine Ligands

Giorgia Zanchin et al.

Summary: In addition to the synergy between chromium and the ligand, the nature of the aluminum activator, the presence of the additive, and the polymerization temperature play crucial roles in the polymerization of ethylene. UV-vis-NIR and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques were used to study the activation process and the influence of NEt3 on the catalytic conversion of ethylene. NEt3 interacts with the aluminum cocatalyst to affect the catalytic ion pair formation.

Crystallization of precisely halogen-substituted polyethylenes induced by ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber

Weijun Miao et al.

Summary: The study found ribbon crystals with molecular chains parallel to the fiber axis formed on the UHMWPE fiber surface, and the size and regularity decreased with the increase of substituent volume; when the substituent volume increased to Cl and Br, the order of crystal formed on the fiber surface was relatively low and could not induce the crystallization of peripheral molecules.

An in situ surface modification method of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber on the basis of dry gel-spinning technique

Meng Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel in situ surface modification strategy for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers using dry gel-spinning technique and directional entrapping modification is proposed. The surface modification with poly (ethylene oxide) monooleate (OEO) as the modifier involves short entrapping time combined with long storage period to match the spinning process, resulting in enhanced impact strength of epoxy resin composite by 43.5% due to improved fiber surface polarity.

Radiation-induced cross-linking: a novel avenue to permanent 3D modification of polymeric membranes

Yu Gu et al.

Summary: The modification of PVDF membranes with a 3D approach using gamma-ray irradiation to cross-link PVA was found to be effective in improving the hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of the membranes. By customizing the pore size and distribution with controlled PVA concentration, the rejection ability and resistance to chemical cleaning were enhanced, prolonging the membrane service lifetime. This modification method can be expanded to other hydrophilic macromolecular modifiers, demonstrating its universality in functionalizing polymeric membranes for improved performance.
