Physicochemical properties of surface sediments in the Taklimakan desert, northwestern China, and their relationship with oasis-desert evolution

Bing Liu et al.

Summary: By analyzing the physicochemical indicators of surface sediments in modern oasis-desert evolution stages, this study found distinct characteristics in oasis and desert sediments, which can be used for reconstructing past oasis-desert evolution trends. The results provide new insights into the selection of appropriate indicators for analyzing and reconstructing the evolution of oasis-desert landscapes.

Modern sand supply of the Tengger Desert and temporal variations in sand provenance driven by northern Hemisphere glaciation

Qida Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the surface processes in the Tengger Desert of China and their response to long-term global cooling. The study suggests that glaciation in high latitudes and high mountains of the Northern Hemisphere have a significant impact on wind-blown sand and fluvial sand in Chinese deserts.

Early-Mid Holocene climatic changes inferred from colors of eolian deposits in the Mu Us Desert

Zhiyong Ding et al.

Summary: Investigations into the early-mid Holocene climate changes in the southeastern margin of the Mu Us Desert revealed that the climate in the region was primarily influenced by the East Asian Summer Monsoon, summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere, and ocean-atmosphere interaction patterns in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

No projected global drylands expansion under greenhouse warming

Alexis Berg et al.

Summary: Model projections using an atmospheric aridity proxy show future expansion of drylands under climate change, but an alternative index based on ecohydrological variables suggests no global expansion. The aridity index overestimates changes compared to the ecohydrological index, indicating differing sensitivities to hydroclimate change and opposite responses to increasing atmospheric CO2. Despite greater uncertainties, climate model ecohydrological projections do not support global drylands expansion under greenhouse warming as previously claimed based on atmospheric aridity.

Quantitative analysis of the sedimentary architecture of eolian successions developed under icehouse and greenhouse climatic conditions

Grace I. E. Cosgrove et al.

Summary: The study conducted a quantitative analysis of 34 eolian systems, revealing significant differences in the preserved sedimentary architectures under different climatic conditions. Eolian elements accumulated under icehouse conditions are thinner compared to their greenhouse counterparts, which may be related to climate-induced changes in trade winds.

Warming-Induced Northwestward Migration of the Asian Summer Monsoon in the Geological Past: Evidence From Climate Simulations and Geological Reconstructions

Xiaofang Huang et al.

Summary: This study used simulations to analyze the response of the Asian summer monsoon to global warming during different time periods. The results showed that with global warming, the Asian monsoonal rain belt moved northwestward, intensifying the western Pacific subtropical high and leading to wetter conditions in India and northern China. Conversely, the Indo-China Peninsula and southern China are likely to experience more frequent droughts in a warmer world reminiscent of the mid-Pliocene.
