Placing North Pacific paleo-oxygenation records on a common scale using multivariate analysis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages

Sharon Sharon et al.

Summary: Comparative analyses show that dysoxic events in the Gulf of Alaska are of equal severity but shorter duration compared to sites in California during the Holocene and MIS3 interstadials. Differences in oxygenation levels may be related to the influence of North Pacific Intermediate Water and the California Undercurrent. Strengthening of the California Undercurrent could lead to reduced dissolved oxygen levels in the subpolar North Pacific.

Reconstructing Paleo-oxygenation for the Last 54,000 Years in the Gulf of Alaska Using Cross-validated Benthic Foraminiferal and Geochemical Records

Sharon et al.

Summary: Marine sediment records in the North Pacific show multiple dysoxic events near continental margins and OMZs. A 54,000-year-long record from the Gulf of Alaska reveals low-oxygen events in the early Holocene, B/A period, and MIS 3, indicating abrupt oxygenation changes. Quantitative estimates from benthic foraminiferal assemblages are crucial for forecasting future oxygenation changes in OMZs and marine ecosystems.

Revisiting the marine reservoir age in Baja California continental margin sediments using C-14 and 210Pb dating

Summary: Knowledge of the Marine Reservoir Effect (MRE) correction is crucial in establishing accurate age-depth models for marine sediment records. Inconsistent application of MRE corrections at Soledad Basin, Baja California, Mexico has led to confusion about the proper correction value of Delta R. This study used an analytical approach to determine new regional Delta R values, highlighting the importance of correct local reservoir age usage to avoid significant errors in palaeoceanographic reconstructions.

Toward a global calibration for quantifying past oxygenation in oxygen minimum zones using benthic Foraminifera

Martin Tetard et al.

Summary: OMZs are oceanic areas with low levels of dissolved oxygen, expanding due to global warming. A new method of oxygen reconstruction, using benthic foraminiferal tests, was developed and calibrated for use in different oceanic regions. This method, along with two others based on benthic foraminiferal assemblages and porosity of a single species, provided consistent past oxygenation reconstructions.
