Art by firelight? Using experimental and digital techniques to explore Magdalenian engraved plaquette use at Montastruc (France)

Summary: This paper examines the use of Palaeolithic stone plaquettes excavated from the Montastruc rockshelter site in France. Through microscopy, 3D modeling, and experimental archaeology, it suggests that the plaquettes were likely used near hearths in low light conditions, and the interaction between engraved forms and flickering firelight made them appear dynamic and alive. Birds and bovids: new parietal engravings at the Romanelli Cave, Apulia

A recent systematic investigation has led to the discovery of new parietal art, including animal figures, geometric motifs and other marks, which identify the use of different tools and techniques, as well as multiple activity phases. Radiocarbon dating of nearby deposits raises questions about the chronology, technology, and wider connections between Upper Palaeolithic cave sites across western Eurasia.
