Risk-of-bias VISualization (robvis): An R package and Shiny web app for visualizing risk-of-bias assessments

Luke A. McGuinness et al.

Summary: Despite the availability of numerous software options for evidence synthesis, there is currently no universal tool for generating figures to display and explore risk-of-bias assessments. However, tools such as the R programming environment and Shiny have made it easy to create new tools for producing evidence syntheses. The new tool robvis facilitates the rapid production of publication-quality risk-of-bias assessment figures and is available as an R package and web app.

The effect direction plot revisited: Application of the 2019 Cochrane Handbook guidance on alternative synthesis methods

Michele Hilton Boon et al.

Summary: Effect direction can be used as a standardized metric for synthesizing diverse effect measures in systematic reviews, with ED plot providing a method of visualization without meta-analysis. The revised ED plot removes statistical significance and suggests caution in interpreting apparent patterns in effect direction, especially with a small number of included studies. This alternative method of synthesis enables a transparent link between data and conclusions of systematic reviews, particularly useful for reviews with nonrandomized studies and diverse sources of evidence.

Summary: The study found that in patients with unipolar depression, mind-body exercise plus treatment as usual and vigorous strength exercise were more effective compared to standard treatment, while mind-body exercise had beneficial effects compared to passive control.

Aerobic Exercise and Stretching as Add-On to Inpatient Treatment for Depression Have No Differential Effects on Stress-Axis Activity, Serum-BDNF, TNF-Alpha and Objective Sleep Measures

Christian Imboden et al.

Summary: While some neurobiological variables improved during inpatient treatment (CAR, sBDNF), no evidence was found for differential effects between AE and an active control condition (stretching). However, patients in which cardiorespiratory fitness increased showed higher improvements in depression severity and depression-related sleep-parameters.

Summary: The study showed that mindfulness-based yoga practice had a significant impact on reducing stress and burnout, improving vitality, sleep quality, serenity, and mindfulness among nurses and healthcare professionals. However, diurnal cortisol slopes and blood pressure showed no significant improvement.
