The Prevalence of Preadolescent Eating Disorders in the United States

Stuart B. Murray et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of eating disorders among 10 to 11-year-old children in the United States and found that binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common subtype in this age group.

Regional gray matter abnormalities in pre-adolescent binge eating disorder: A voxel-based morphometry study

Stuart B. Murray et al.

Summary: Early-onset binge eating disorder (BED) may be characterized by diffuse morphological abnormalities in gray matter density, suggesting alterations in cortical architecture which may reflect decreased synaptic pruning and arborization, or decreased myelinated fibers and therefore inter-regional afferents.

Last word: A call to develop specific medical treatment guidelines for adolescent males with eating disorders

Kyle T. Ganson et al.

Summary: Males with eating disorders are often underdiagnosed and undertreated, possibly due to a lack of guidance and training for medical professionals in assessing and treating eating disorders. More research is needed to guide screening, medical treatment, and training of health professions in adolescent males with eating disorders.

Combined antisaccade task and transcranial direct current stimulation to increase response inhibition in binge eating disorder

Sebastian M. Max et al.

Summary: By combining a food-modified antisaccade task with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), this study found that under the 2mA tDCS condition, patients with binge eating disorder showed reduced latencies of correct antisaccades and decreased binge eating episodes. However, under the 1mA tDCS condition, the latencies of correct antisaccades increased. Further randomized clinical trials are needed to fully understand the reduction in binge eating episodes and explore the efficacy of a combined antisaccade and tDCS training for BED.

Gonadal Hormone Influences on Sex Differences in Binge Eating Across Development

Megan E. Mikhail et al.

Summary: Gonadal hormones play a significant role in the risk of binge eating, gender differences, and within-gender variability, with higher estradiol levels in females and higher testosterone levels in males being protective. The impact of gonadal hormones may be most pronounced in individuals with other risk factors, such as genetic, temperamental, and psychosocial risks.

Correspondence Between Perceived Pubertal Development and Hormone Levels in 9-10 Year-Olds From the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study

Megan M. Herting et al.

Summary: The study found that sociodemographic characteristics were associated with both objective hormone levels and self-reported physical measures of pubertal maturation in a large, diverse sample of 9-10 year-olds. The latent variables of pubertal maturation described a complex interplay between perceived physical changes and hormone levels, with one factor driven by higher hormone levels and another driven by perceived physical maturation. The synchronous and asynchronous relationships between hormones and physical features were revealed in this large young adolescent sample.
