High-pressure small-angle X-ray scattering cell for biological solutions and soft materials

Durgesh K. Rai et al.

Summary: Pressure plays a crucial role in determining the behavior of biological macromolecules, affecting protein denaturation, enzyme kinetics, and molecular shape. The development of a high-pressure SAXS sample cell provides researchers with a valuable tool for studying biological materials under extreme conditions.

The Molecular Basis for Life in Extreme Environments

Nozomi Ando et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, sampling and genomic efforts have revealed a vast quantity and diversity of life in Earth's extreme environments, presenting a challenge in understanding the molecular basis of life in such inhospitable conditions. This review discusses the physicochemical properties of extreme environments, recent progress in extreme environmental genomics, and the current understanding of biomolecular adaptation to extreme conditions, as well as the need for methodologies adapted to extreme conditions for studying extremophiles' biomolecular structure-function relationships. Possible future directions in extreme biophysics are briefly discussed.

Protein unfolded states populated at high and ambient pressure are similarly compact

Balasubramanian Harish et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the pressure-unfolded state of the protein is very similar to the unfolded state observed at ambient pressure, demonstrating that pressure perturbation is a powerful approach for observing the unfolded states of proteins under nearly native conditions.
