Maleic acid crosslinked PVA/mica coating was prepared and applied to barrier paper. The coating exhibited uniform distribution of mica and demonstrated excellent barrier, mechanical properties, antibacterial activity, and degradation performance.
Maleic acid crosslinked PVA/mica coating was prepared and applied to barrier paper. The interaction between maleic acid, PVA, and mica was confirmed by FTIR spectra, the absorption peak of the hydroxyl group decreased after crosslinking. SEM showed that the mica is intercalated evenly in the coating. The PVA coating with maleic acid crosslinking has an excellent barrier and mechanical properties, further improving by introducing mica. The OTR and WVTR of 3% mica-MA-PVA coated paper were the lowest, 0.1 cm(3)/(m(2).24 h.0.1 MPa) and 162 g/m(2).24 h, respectively, and the tensile index was 68.34 N.m/g. The antibacterial test showed that the 3% mica-MA-PVA coated paper had good antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The disintegration rate of 3% mica-MA-PVA coated paper reached 95.54% in 42 days under simulated aerobic composting, and the degradation performance of coated paper was excellent.
