Recent developments of titanium dioxide materials for aquatic antifouling application

Wai Szeto et al.

Summary: Biological fouling on submerged artificial surfaces has traditionally been combated with toxins, but these have harmful effects on both human and environment. Coatings with toxic materials have been replaced by those with complete absence of toxins, but they still have deficiencies. In recent years, titanium dioxide has emerged as a promising alternative for antifouling materials.

Electrochemically activated laser-induced graphene coatings against marine biofouling

Emily Manderfeld et al.

Summary: Research has shown that laser-induced graphene can resist marine bacterial attachment and reduce their viability. Superhydrophobic LIG coatings can effectively prevent bacteria accumulation. Electrochemical measurements indicate that treated LIG can reduce bacteria accumulation, thereby combating marine fouling.

Fabrication of bio-based amphiphilic hydrogel coating with excellent antifouling and mechanical properties

Guangming Lu et al.

Summary: A bio-based amphiphilic hydrogel coating with excellent antifouling and mechanical properties was reported, achieved by in-situ formation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic interpenetrating polymer network. The coating showed superior mechanical properties and excellent resistance to fouling of proteins, bacteria, and microorganisms. Field test in East China Sea confirmed the intact and almost no marine organisms attached to the coating, providing a new strategy for the fabrication of bio-based and high-performance antifouling coatings.

Durable self-polishing antifouling Cu-Ti coating by a micron-scale Cu/Ti laminated microstructure design

Jiajia Tian et al.

Summary: Marine biofouling is a major issue affecting the service performance and lifespan of marine infrastructures. Developing a durable and environmentally friendly antifouling coating remains a critical challenge in maritime engineering. The Cu-Ti composite coating showed remarkable antifouling efficiency and a significantly longer lifetime compared to traditional coatings, while also exhibiting higher mechanical durability.

Low surface energy self-polishing polymer grafted MWNTs for antibacterial coating and controlled-release property of Cu2O

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: The article introduces a novel multi-system antifouling technology, designing and synthesizing a polymer coating with low surface energy and self-polishing performance, and covalently immobilizing polyurethane on the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes to form a multifunctional antifouling coating. By adjusting copolymerization and adding MWNTs to enhance the antibacterial effect of the polymer coating, as well as combining with Cu2O as a carrier to control its release rate.
