Transition Metal Catalysts for Boron Combustion

Kerri-Lee Chintersingh et al.

Summary: This study prepared composite powders containing metal additives with boron using high energy mechanical milling, and conducted combustion experiments to analyze their performance. The results showed that adding Hf significantly accelerated combustion, while adding Fe improved the burn rate in air with no clear advantage in other oxidizing environments. Using acetonitrile and stearic acid as PCA for preparing B-Fe composites resulted in greater refinement of iron and stronger acceleration in the burn rates of the prepared powders particles in air.

Surface-Functionalized Boron Nanoparticles with Reduced Oxide Content by Nonthermal Plasma Processing for Nanoenergetic Applications

Prawal P. K. Agarwal et al.

Summary: The development of an in situ nonthermal plasma technology improved the oxidation and energy release of boron nanoparticles. Treatment with nonthermal hydrogen plasma and PECVD using perfluorodecalin resulted in a reduction of the surface oxide layer and formation of a passivation barrier, leading to increased metallic boron content and energy release. The PECVD coating provided excellent passivation against air and humidity for 60 days, indicating the potential benefits for nanoenergetic applications.

Probing boron thermite energy release at rapid heating rates

Jennifer L. Gottfried et al.

Summary: Boron is a promising fuel for energetic materials due to its high energy density when combined with CuO and Bi2O3 in thermite reactions. The application of LASEM technique has enabled the quantification of energy release and excitation temperatures of B/metal oxide samples on microsecond and millisecond timescales. The enhancement of ignition in these composites contributes to the early-time energy release, as shown by relative measurements in agreement with bomb calorimetry and DSC analysis. Additionally, the strong affinity of CuO for both B and Bi2O3 leads to a synergetic enhancement effect in the binary metal oxide mixture.

Spherical boron powders prepared by mechanical milling in immiscible liquids

Summary: Spherical boron powders with sizes ranging from 4 to 100 μm were prepared by ball milling a commercial boron powder, with a narrow size distribution. Fragile spherical particles showed improved mechanical stability when a fluorocarbon binder was added. Adjusting milling parameters could alter the size distribution of the formed spheres.
