From Quality-I to Quality-II: cultivating an error culture to support lean thinking and rework mitigation in infrastructure projects

Peter E. D. Love et al.

Summary: This paper suggests the need for construction organizations to establish an error management culture to reduce rework and support lean thinking. It emphasizes the importance of leadership, psychological safety, and coaching in cultivating a culture that accepts errors and focuses on mitigating their consequences. The contributions of this paper include a new theoretical foundation grounded in Quality-II and practical suggestions based on real experiences to monitor and anticipate rework in construction.

The Duality and Paradoxical Tensions of Quality and Safety: Managing Error in Construction Projects

Peter E. D. Love et al.

Summary: This article examines the paradoxical tensions between quality and safety in construction organizations and projects, proposing a dualistic approach to balance these competing demands. Managers are advised to adopt ambidexterity in order to optimize both quality and safety, while managing the tensions of error prevention and error management.

Analysis of bridge failures in India from 1977 to 2017

Rajeev Kumar Garg et al.

Summary: This study collected data on bridge failures in India from 1977-2017, categorizing them based on material and cause of failure. The average age of failure was found to be 34.5 years, which is much lower than the expected design life. A comparison with existing literature revealed unique failure patterns in Indian bridges. The study highlights the value of collecting data from open sources for drawing meaningful conclusions about bridge service life and infrastructure asset management.

Investigating the Relationship between Reworks and Contractual Claims: The Salience of Contract Conditions

Ramin Asadi et al.

Summary: Statistics show a high rate of contractual claims in construction projects, negatively impacting the progress of the construction industry. Rework is identified as one of the main underlying factors leading to contractual claims. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between claims and rework based on contract documents. A systematic literature review is conducted to identify the sources of rework, followed by a questionnaire survey to examine the contractual issues. The findings highlight the need for improvement in contract documents to address rework causes and ensure effective handling of claims.

State of Science: Why Does Rework Occur in Construction? What Are Its Consequences? And What Can be Done to Mitigate Its Occurrence?

Peter E. D. Love et al.

Summary: This paper provides a theoretical framework to understand the causes, consequences, and mitigation of rework in construction. It emphasizes the importance of creating an error-mastery culture in construction organizations and projects. The paper also suggests that implementing techniques and tools, such as the Last Planner and building information modeling, can further help address rework.

Smart data and business analytics: A theoretical framework for managing rework risks in mega-projects

Jane Matthews et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the challenges of classifying and creating an ontology for rework in construction projects. The study explores how rework information is currently managed in a transport mega-project and identifies the hindrances in location, format, structure, granularity, and redundancy. The authors propose a theoretical framework that utilizes a smart data approach to effectively manage rework risks through business analytics.

Error culture and its impact on rework: An exploration of norms and practices in a transport mega-project

Peter E. D. Love et al.

Summary: This article examines the error culture of an alliance in a transport mega-project and finds that an error management culture can reduce rework, while an error aversion culture is negatively associated with the ability to reduce rework. The article calls for a focus on reducing negative error consequences, providing a psychologically safe work environment, and coaching to ensure learning is transferred from individuals to the organization.
