Numerical modelling of the effects of vessel length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) on pressure piling

Damilare Ogungbemide et al.

Summary: Pressure piling poses a major explosion hazard in interconnected process vessels, generating violent explosions that are difficult to predict based solely on dust concentration. Advanced CFD modeling shows promise in accurately understanding the complexities of pressure piling. This study uses numerical simulations to investigate the impact of the length-to-diameter ratio of the primary vessel on pressure piling, offering insights into the effects of geometric design on explosion hazards.

Anna Espekvist et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple model for devolatilization of biomass under suspension firing conditions, using a single first order reaction. Results show that particle radius and gas phase temperature have a significant influence on devolatilization rate, while aspect ratio has a smaller effect that cannot be neglected.

Influence of venting coefficient on disastrous effects of aluminium powder explosions

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: Research using CFD on the explosion and venting processes of aluminium dust revealed that increasing the venting coefficient can reduce indoor overpressure and explosion temperature, but also increase outdoor damage distance. Thus, current safety protection distances for aluminium powder production sites need revision.

Influence of components interaction on pyrolysis and explosion of biomass dust

Aihua Liu et al.

Summary: The study on the interactions among lignocellulosic biomass components reveals that cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin have distinct effects on the pyrolysis and explosion behavior of biomass dust. Cellulose enhances weight loss peak intensity and explosion pressure, hemicellulose improves shoulder peak intensity and pressure rise rate, while lignin increases solid residue and decreases explosion pressure. The interactions among these components cause the experimental thermogravimetric curve to lag behind the predicted curve, with cellulose and lignin mainly determining explosion pressure and hemicellulose content affecting pressure rise rate.

On the pyrotechnic ignitors role in dust explosion testing: Comparison between 20 L and 1 m3 explosion vessels

Maria Portarapillo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of pyrotechnic ignitors on pressure trends and temperature distributions in 20 L and 1 m(3) standard test vessels, showing that igniter explosions in the 20 L vessel lead to a significant increase in pressure and a more rapid and uniform diffusion of temperature compared to the 1 m(3) vessel. The flame propagation generated by the ignitors in the 20 L vessel is relevant, resulting in overdriving phenomenon and higher deflagration index values for many organic dusts measured in the 20 L vessel compared to the 1 m(3) vessel. Additionally, CFD simulations indicate that the hot core dissipates faster in the 20 L vessel due to its higher turbulence level, making dusts controlled by particle heating more prone to combustion in the 1 m(3) vessel.
