How production networks amplify economic growth

James McNerney et al.

Summary: Technological improvement is the most important factor for long-term economic growth. In this study, the authors argue that an economy can be seen as a network where producers buy and convert goods, and sell them to households or other producers. They predict that longer production chains in an industry result in faster price reduction, and longer production chains in a country lead to faster economic growth. These predictions are supported by data from the World Input Output Database, and the results highlight the significant role of production chains in shaping prices, output growth, and structural change in the long term.

Supply Network Formation and Fragility

Matthew Elliott et al.

Summary: This study models the production of complex goods in a large supply network. Firms in the network source essential inputs through relationships with other firms and strategically invest to strengthen these relationships. The research finds that supply networks of intermediate productivity are fragile in equilibrium, even though this is inefficient.
