A Defective Nanotube Molecule of C552H496N24 with Pyridinic and Pyrrolic Nitrogen Atoms

Koki Ikemoto et al.

Summary: A 3-nm molecule with a cylindrical core and cross-shaped rims was designed and synthesized using a modular synthetic route. Carbazole units were incorporated at the rims and two types of nitrogen atoms were doped into the defective cylinder, leading to solvatochromic shifts in fluorescence. Crystallographic analyses of the large molecule revealed a unique helical arrangement of nitrogen-doped cylinders in the crystal.

A minimal cage of a diamond twin with chirality

Toshiya M. Fukunaga et al.

Summary: The study reports the synthesis and optical resolution of a minimal cage structure of a chiral diamond-twin network, which is assembled with triangular phenine units at 14 vertices forming 15 biaryl edges. The unique chirality of the network revealed by the minimal cage may stimulate explorations of chiral carbonaceous materials.

A Case Study of Stereoisomerism with [6]Cyclo[4]helicenylenes

Taisuke Matsuno et al.

Summary: A noncylindrical cycloarylene was designed using [4]helicene as an arylene panel and assembled by R/S-biaryl linkages. The structural mathematics of congeners can be best described by R/S-configurations of biaryls rather than by panel orientations. Comparisons with structurally relevant cycloarylenes have enriched our understanding of cyclostereoisomerism and structural chemistry.

Metal-Templated Oligomeric Macrocyclization via Coupling for Metal-Doped π-Systems

Seungmin Yang et al.

Summary: A method for synthesizing metal-doped aromatic macrocycles has been developed, using Ni as the template to assemble five pyridine units to form aryl-aryl linkages. The method was successful in selectively obtaining a pentameric oligopyridyl macrocycle and can be applied to gram-scale synthesis. The resulting molecule is a nanometer-sized, bowl-shaped molecule with a unique combination of 120 pi electrons and 8d electrons.
