Summary: The study investigates the kinetic effects of NO addition on cool and warm diffusion flames of n-dodecane, showing that NO plays different roles due to their different reaction pathways and interactions with NO. The results reveal that NO addition decreases cool flame extinction limit, delays extinction transition, and promotes ignition transition. The developed kinetic model captures the inhibiting effect of NO on cool flame extinction, but fails to predict warm flame reignition to hot flame.

The radical index and the effect of oxygen concentration on non-premixed cool flame extinction of large n-alkanes

Summary: The study measured the effects of fuel and oxygen concentrations on the extinction limits of non-premixed cool flames for large n-alkanes, deriving a scaling law between cool flame reactivity and oxygen concentration and developing a radical index to rank cool flame reactivity of n-alkanes. The results showed a nonlinear dependence of cool flame extinction limits on oxygen concentration and indicated that the cool flame low temperature reactivity of n-alkanes is proportional to nth power of oxygen mole fraction, with n = 1.5-2. Additionally, a cool flame radical index was proposed to evaluate the role of cool flame reactivity on the extinction limits of large n-alkanes, showing an increase in the index with the carbon length of the fuel molecules.
