Origin and age of the Shenshan tectonic melange in the Jiangshan-Shaoxing-Pingxiang Fault and late Early Paleozoic juxtaposition of the Yangtze Block and the West Cathaysia terrane, South China

Lijun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the amalgamation of the Yangtze Block and the West Cathaysia terrane in South China, suggesting that they were two separate microcontinents that were accreted through strike-slip movement along the JSP Fault in the early Paleozoic. The findings also propose a comparison between this model and the accretion of terranes in the North American Cordillera.

Diversification of Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suites in a mushy middle crust

Jillian Kendrick et al.

Summary: Tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suites are a debated component of Earth's first continents. We propose a new petrological-geochemical model that explains the coexistence of TTGs in the middle crust and suggests that their compositions are controlled by the separation of early-crystallizing plagioclase and melt.

The nature of Paleoproterozoic basement in the northern Yangtze and its geological implication

Xiaoyu Yuan et al.

Summary: This study examines the Precambrian basement rocks in the Feidong Complex to understand the evolution of the Yangtze Craton. The results show that the granitic gneisses and amphibolites reflect the growth and reworking of the Archean crust, while the potassic granites are related to continental collision events.

A refined study of Paleoproterozoic high-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism in the Kongling complex of northern Yangtze block

Lin-Sen Li et al.

Summary: The Paleoproterozoic era is a critical period for understanding global geodynamic regimes and plate tectonic processes. However, detailed studies on pressure-temperature-time paths of Paleoproterozoic metamorphic rocks are limited. In this study, zircon U-Pb geochronology was used to identify a prolonged Paleoproterozoic metamorphism in the Kongling Complex of the northern Yangtze Block. The results contradict previous hypotheses and suggest a typical warm subduction/collision in the Paleoproterozoic plate tectonic regime.

Neoarchean granitic rocks from the Jiamiao area of the Dabie orogen: Implications on the formation and early evolution of the Yangtze Craton

Yang Tian et al.

Summary: This article provides direct evidence for the distribution and evolution of Neoarchean basement rocks in the Yangtze Craton through geological investigations and zircon U-Pb geochronology of three plutons in the Dabie orogen. The study suggests that the formation of these rocks is mainly through reworking of Paleo-Mesoarchean basement rocks with a minor contribution of supracrustal material. In addition, the Yangtze Craton may comprise several microcontinents that collided to form a unified craton around 2.0 Ga.

Early crustal evolution of the Yangtze Block: Constraints from zircon U-Pb-Hf isotope systematics of 3.1-1.9 Ga granitoids in the Cuoke Complex, SW China

Xiaozhuang Cui et al.

Summary: The newly identified Cuoke Complex in South China contains voluminous early Precambrian granitoids, providing key information for the early evolution of the Yangtze Block. The complex consists of granitoids with different crystallization ages and magmatic activities, likely derived from reworking of ancient crustal materials or remelting of juvenile continental crust.

Paleoproterozoic ophiolitic melanges and orogenesis in the northern Yangtze Craton: Evidence for the operation of modern-style plate tectonics

Wenxiao Zhou et al.

Summary: The study presents a comprehensive analysis of a 2.12-2.03 billion-year-old ophiolitic melange in the North Kongling Complex, revealing the derivation of amphibolite and serpentinite blocks from a subarc mantle wedge metasomatized by slab-derived fluids/melts. The garnet amphibolite underwent intermediate temperature/pressure metamorphism around 2.03 billion years ago, with a geothermal gradient associated with subduction-collision processes.

Evidence for discrete Archean microcontinents in the Yangtze Craton

Tian Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reports the discovery of Archean rocks in a new area in the southern Dabie orogenic belt, providing insights into the Archean continental architecture. The Xishui gneiss in the Yangtze Craton exhibits peraluminous characteristics and high-K talc-alkaline series, with protolith ages dating back to 2.51-2.47 Ga. The crustal evolution in the eight exposed Archean terranes suggests that they were independent microcontinents, which amalgamated to form the present-day Yangtze Craton around 2.0-1.9 Ga during the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent.

Syn-exhumation magmatism in an active continental margin above a continental subduction zone: Evidence from Late Triassic mafic igneous rocks in the southeastern North China Block

Wei Fang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of syn-exhumation mafic igneous rocks in an active continental margin above a continental subduction zone. These rocks, which exhibit consistent Late Triassic zircon U-Pb ages, were derived from partial melting of ultramafic metasomatites generated by reaction of felsic melts from the subducted South China Block with the mantle wedge peridotite beneath the North China Block. The systematic variations in geochemical variables indicate pyroxenite-rich and hornblendite-rich lithologies for the sub-alkaline and alkaline series igneous rocks, reflecting the crust-mantle interactions and the generation of syn-exhumation magmatism during the late stage of continental collision.
