Particle-Laden Turbulence: Progress and Perspectives

Luca Brandt et al.

Summary: This review discusses the recent progress in understanding the physics of particle-laden turbulence, focusing on spherical particles in homogeneous and wall-bounded flows. The analysis of recent data suggests that conclusions from zero gravity conditions cannot be generalized, and the particle response time alone is insufficient to characterize the dynamics of finite-size particles. Further studies are needed to bridge the gap between dilute and concentrated conditions, and to explore the fluid dynamics of suspensions with theoretical tools accounting for both phases.

Large eddy simulation of water jets under transcritical and supercritical conditions

Yifei Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, large eddy simulations were performed to investigate the characteristics of supercritical water jets. The results show that buoyancy effect and density difference have a significant impact on the flow of the jet. The enhancement of turbulence weakens the influence of high density gradient layer on jet stability. Acceleration causes jet contraction and enhances radial turbulence and heat transfer.

Particle-fluid-wall interaction of inertial spherical particles in a turbulent boundary layer

Lucia J. Baker et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the dynamics of millimeter-sized spherical particles suspended in open channel flow. The research found that particles travel at a lower mean velocity than the fluid and experience instantaneous slip near the wall. Particle transport is strongly linked to ejections, with no evidence of turbophoresis.

Visualization of the flow morphology of submerged jets in subcritical and supercritical water

Yifei Ren et al.

Summary: Observation and analysis of water jet morphologies reveal that the driving force and initial state of the jet are critical factors influencing jet morphology, while turbulence of the ambient fluid can cause irregular deformation of the jet shape.

Vortical structures and turbulence characteristics in an isothermal channel flow at supercritical pressure

Binbin Pei et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the dynamics of vortical structures in an isothermal turbulent channel flow at supercritical pressure, revealing the complicated effects of variations in thermo-physical properties. The findings include changes in flow direction and the increase of vortex sheets and tubes near the cold wall, as well as the modulation of typical hairpin vortices. Additionally, the study confirms the increased turbulence anisotropy and stronger vortex stretching in cases with variable properties.

Influence of Stefan flow on the drag coefficient and heat transfer of a spherical particle in a supercritical water cross flow

Hui Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of varying Stefan flow intensity on the drag coefficient and Nusselt number of supercritical water flowing around a fixed spherical particle. Results show that with increasing Stefan flow intensity, both Cd and Nu decrease while the thickness of velocity and temperature boundary layers increases. Additionally, a model for particles with Stefan flow is constructed and correlation formulas for Cd and Nu are derived.
