Effects of procyanidin treatment on the ripening and softening of banana fruit during storage

Jiao Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that treatment with 1% procyanidin solution effectively inhibited the softening process of banana fruit, resulting in higher firmness and color intensity, as well as reduced soluble solids content and ethylene production in the pulp. Additionally, the treatment led to lower respiration rate and malondialdehyde concentration in the fruit.

Synergistic effect of gum Arabic and carboxymethyl cellulose as biocomposite coating delays senescence in stored tomatoes by regulating antioxidants and cell wall degradation

Shaghef Ejaz et al.

Summary: This study tested a novel combination of hydrocolloid gum arabic (GA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a coating to extend the postharvest life of tomatoes. The results showed that the biocomposite hydrocolloid coating reduced weight loss, decay percentage, and stress markers in tomato fruits. It also preserved bioactive compounds, color, and enzymatic ROS scavenging mechanism, and delayed senescence by maintaining cell wall fractions.

The effect of layer-by-layer edible coating on the shelf life and transcriptome of 'Kosui' Japanese pear fruit

Natsuki Hira et al.

Summary: Edible coatings, such as chitosan/alginate-based layer-by-layer (LBL) coatings, have been shown to effectively prolong the shelf life of fruits by reducing respiration and ethylene production rates, inhibiting firmness loss, and maintaining peel color. Through RNA-Seq analysis, it was found that LBL coatings downregulated genes related to ethylene production and fruit ripening, while upregulating genes associated with the glycolysis pathway. This suggests that the extended shelf life achieved by LBL coatings may be due to the control of aerobic-anaerobic metabolism balance.

Impact of electron-beam irradiation combined with shellac coating on the suppression of chlorophyll degradation and water loss of lime fruit during storage

Ratchagon Pongsri et al.

Summary: The study showed that 1 kGy of electron-beam irradiation delayed the color change of lime peel, while increasing respiration rate and weight loss. However, 10% shellac coating applied before irradiation could minimize respiration rate and water loss. The combined treatment maintained chlorophyll content and suppressed enzyme activity, but affected titratable acidity and increased levels of total ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide.
