Resolving the Molecular Origin of Mechanical Relaxations in Donor-Acceptor Polymer Semiconductors

Nrup Balar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermomechanical behavior of a series of polymers based on benzodithiophene using dynamic mechanical analysis, revealing three prominent relaxation transitions. Side chains play a crucial role in determining T-gamma, with mixing different side chain chemistries resulting in splitting of the gamma-relaxation. Through processing, it is shown that the alpha-relaxation is due to aggregate formation.

Kartik Choudhary et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of pi-conjugated polymers play a crucial role in determining the stability and manufacturability of devices used in energy and healthcare applications. The morphology of the solid film, influenced by the processing method, affects properties such as modulus, toughness, and strength. Different scalable deposition processes result in thin films with varying mechanical properties, with solution shearing producing films with the highest modulus, strength, and toughness.

Structural and Optical Identification of Planar Side-Chain Stacking P3HT Nanowires

He-Chun Chou et al.

Summary: A new planar crystalline P3HT architecture assembled by hexyl side chains was identified in this study, including both pi-pi stacking and side-chain stacking nanowires, which exhibited different interchain coupling strengths and spectroscopic properties due to their distinct stacking structures. The coexistence of different stacking architectures in P3HT films and nanowires resulted in multiplicity in their optical properties, as characterized using confocal microscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy.

Jingyang Xiao et al.

Summary: A novel fluorinated polythiophene derivative, P4T2F-HD, is introduced to significantly improve the morphology of bulk heterojunction active layers in organic solar cells. By optimizing the film morphology and interface structure, a record power conversion efficiency of 13.65% for polythiophene-based OSCs was achieved through the use of P4T2F-HD:Y6-BO films processed from nonhalogenated solvents.

An effect of crystallographic distortion on carrier mobility in poly(3-hexylthiophene) thin films

Tatsuki Abe et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated how the out-of-plane hole mobility in P3HT changes with decreasing film thickness, attributing the decrease in mobility to an increase in energetical and spatial distribution of hopping sites caused by crystallographic distortion in the thin films. Grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed the induced distributions of charge carriers.

Tuning the randomization of lamellar orientation in poly (3-hexylthiophene) thin films with substrate nano-curvature

Roberta Ruffino et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of substrates with uniform nanocurvature on the structure of deposited thin films of high molecular weight regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). It was found that substrate curvature influences both the lamellar persistence length and the 3D orientation, leading to changes in dark conductivity measurements. The results suggest a strong correlation between the dark conductivity increase and curvature-induced lamellar features in regio-regular P3HT thin films.

Strategic design and synthesis of π-conjugated polymers suitable as intrinsically stretchable semiconducting materials

Tomoya Higashihara

Summary: Main-chain engineering and side-chain engineering approaches are used to design and synthesize semiconducting polymers with intrinsic ductility and/or stretchability. Different approaches yield polymers with varying electronic and mechanical properties, and further development of versatile methods is necessary to address the trade-off relationship between these performance aspects.
