Fracture test to accelerate the prediction of polymer embrittlement during aging - Case of PET hydrolysis

Mael Arhant et al.

Summary: The rate of degradation for polymers varies depending on their nature and the environment. Understanding the loss in properties of a polymer within a reasonable time frame is a challenge in the polymer aging community. This study presents a novel approach to decrease the time and investigates the decrease in mechanical properties of polyethylene terephthalate under hydrolysis process.

Chemical coupling between oxidation and hydrolysis in polyamide 6-A key aspect in the understanding of microplastic formation

Q. Deshoulles et al.

Summary: This study investigates the coupling between hydrolysis and oxidation in polyamide 6 and finds that the degradation rate is 80 times faster in water with oxygen than in water without oxygen. Furthermore, the study reveals a strong interaction between thermal oxidation and hydrolysis of polyamide materials at the macromolecular scale.

Origin of embrittlement in Polyamide 6 induced by chemical degradations: mechanisms and governing factors

Q. Deshoulles et al.

Summary: Polyamide 6 films were aged in environments inducing oxidation or hydrolysis, leading to changes in the polymer structure and mechanical properties. The decrease in strain at break is attributed to a decrease in concentration of tie molecules, while the loss in entanglements is associated with the drop in maximal stress. The molar mass and amorphous layer thickness are faithful indicators of embrittlement regardless of degradation mechanism.
