Relevance of the electron transfer pathway in photodynamic activity of Ru(ii) polypyridyl complexes containing 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands under normoxic and hypoxic conditions

Olga Mazuryk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between the spectroscopic and photophysical properties of Ru(ii) polypyridyl complexes and their photodynamic activity in vitro. The Ru(ii) complexes were found to exhibit phototoxic activity mainly through the generation of H2O2 and O-1(2), highlighting the importance of electron-transfer processes in their observed photodynamic activity. The compounds also retained their cytotoxic activity under hypoxic conditions, suggesting a potential for overcoming limitations in photodynamic therapy.

Photocytotoxicity and photoinduced phosphine ligand exchange in a Ru(II) polypyridyl complex

Sean J. Steinke et al.

Summary: This paper reports two new tris-heteroleptic Ru(II) complexes with triphenylphosphine coordination, which show suitable photochemical properties for photochemotherapeutic applications. The study reveals that under visible light irradiation, the complexes exhibit increased activity due to the photoinduced substitution reaction of PPh3 ligand in the excited state. These complexes represent a new design motif for the selective release of PPh3 and CH3CN for use in photochemotherapy.

Inhibition of Matrix Metalloproteinases and Cancer Cell Detachment by Ru(II) Polypyridyl Complexes Containing 4,7-Diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline Ligands-New Candidates for Antimetastatic Agents

Przemyslaw Gajda-Morszewski et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a series of Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes for their cytotoxicity, cell adhesion properties, and inhibition of MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities in lung cancer A549 cells. Results showed that these complexes have moderate cytotoxicity and can enhance cell adhesion while inhibiting MMP-2 and MMP-9 enzyme activities, with [Ru(dip)(2)(bpy-SC)](2+) being the most effective in increasing cell adhesion and influencing MMP-9 activity.

Effect of Alkyl Chain Length on the Photophysical, Photochemical and Photobiological Properties of Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complexes for Their Application as DNA-Targeting, Cellular-Imaging, and Light-Activated Therapeutic Agents

Sandra Estalayo-Adrian et al.

Summary: A family of six Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes with different lengths of alkyl chains have been synthesized and characterized, showing an influence on their photophysical and photochemical properties. The complexes with 21 carbon alkyl chains exhibited changes in emission properties and photosensitization abilities. The study also revealed that the complexes bind to DNA and demonstrated a length-dependent cellular uptake and cytotoxicity in cancer cells.
