Three-decade spatial patterns in surface mass balance of the Nivlisen Ice Shelf, central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica

Bhanu Pratap et al.

Summary: The coastal Droning Maud Land in East Antarctica is characterized by small ice shelves with promontories and locally grounded isles, called ice rises. Shallow ice-penetrating radar sounding was used to study the firn stratigraphy in the area and track reflectors for dating purposes. The study evaluated the spatial SMB distribution and temporal changes over the ice shelf and ice rises using the regional climate model RACMO2.3p2.

Discovery of new colonies by Sentinel2 reveals good and bad news for emperor penguins

Peter T. Fretwell et al.

Summary: The study identified eight new emperor penguin breeding locations and rediscovered three previously known sites, totaling 61 breeding sites. Most of the new colonies are small and may only increase the total population by 5-10%. The use of Sentinel2 satellite imagery facilitated the discoveries, with many colonies found in offshore habitats, indicating that population decreases for the species may be greater than previously thought under business-as-usual greenhouse gas emissions scenarios.

Southern Ocean in-situ temperature trends over 25 years emerge from interannual variability

Matthis Auger et al.

Summary: Despite being one of the least measured regions in the global ocean, the Southern Ocean shows clear trends including warming of subantarctic waters and subsurface subpolar deep waters, as well as cooling of near-surface subpolar waters. This subsurface warming trend is the most robust and significant, indicating a long-term change in the region.

Marine Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas for Penguins in Antarctica, Targets for Conservation Action

Jonathan Handley et al.

Summary: Global targets for area-based conservation and management should consider the quality of such areas in addition to threshold-based targets. In the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, where key biodiversity faces unprecedented risks from climate change and resource extraction demands are growing, evidence suggests that more high quality areas could benefit from a proposed network of marine protected areas (MPAs). Penguins, as indicator species, offer an opportunity to identify high quality marine areas and our data supports the designation of the proposed MPA network in Antarctic waters.

Variability of Sea-Air Carbon Dioxide Flux in Autumn Across the Weddell Gyre and Offshore Dronning Maud Land in the Southern Ocean

Margaret Ojone Ogundare et al.

Summary: By measuring the sea surface fugacity of carbon dioxide in the Weddell gyre and the eastern sector of the Atlantic Southern Ocean in autumn, researchers found that the region was a potential ocean CO2 sink and that photosynthetic CO2 drawdown significantly offset the influence of CO2-rich waters upwelling. The study highlights the importance of increasing seasonal CO2 observations, especially during autumn/winter, to improve flux estimates in the Southern Ocean's seasonal sea ice-covered regions.

A Review and Meta-Analysis of Potential Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Marine Calcifiers From the Southern Ocean

Blanca Figuerola et al.

Summary: Understanding the vulnerability of marine calcifiers to ocean acidification is crucial, especially in the Southern Ocean. The response variation to OA is largely dependent on species' mineralogical composition, with aragonitic and high-Mg calcite species being more susceptible. Ocean warming could exacerbate the effects of OA on these species, while low-Mg calcite species may be more resilient.

Phenology and Environmental Control of Phytoplankton Blooms in the Kong Hakon VII Hav in the Southern Ocean

Hanna M. Kauko et al.

Summary: Understanding the dynamics of phytoplankton bloom phenology in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean revealed the importance of sea ice retreat and zooplankton grazing in driving bloom initiation and termination, respectively. The study also highlighted the spatial correlation between primary productivity and topographic features, suggesting natural fertilization as a contributing factor. Further investigation into the identified bloom regimes in the area may help inform spatial management strategies and anticipate potential shifts in bloom timing due to environmental changes.

Bathymetric Control on Borchgrevink and Roi Baudouin Ice Shelves in East Antarctica

Summary: This article discusses the influences of atmospheric and oceanic melting on ice shelf stability, the impact of subglacial bathymetry on ice shelf stability, and the development and results of the model. The study reveals the existence of deep glacial troughs beneath the ice shelves and bathymetric sills near the continental shelf, indicating sensitivity to climate change and ocean temperatures.

Alexander D. Fraser et al.

Planning marine protected areas under the CCAMLR regime - The case of the Weddell Sea (Antarctica)

Katharina Teschke et al.

Summary: The article provides an overview of the current status of marine protected areas (MPAs) globally, with a focus on the initiatives to establish large-scale MPAs in international waters. The planning process of the Weddell Sea Marine Protected Area (WSMPA) is discussed, highlighting the collaborative, science-based approach taken. The authors suggest that while scientific best practice is important, achieving consensus and political drive is also crucial in the establishment of MPAs in the Southern Ocean.
