Canine coat pigmentation genetics: a review

L. Brancalion et al.

Summary: Our understanding of canine coat colour genetics and health implications is rapidly advancing, with 15 genes known to play roles in determining canine coat colour phenotypes. Many coat phenotypes are influenced by complex and/or epistatic genetic interactions, with some genes associated with aural, visual and neurological impairments. Coat pigmentation in domestic dogs continues to be of significant ethical and economic interest.

Genetics of white color and iridophoroma in Lemon Frost leopard geckos

Longhua Guo et al.

Summary: This study utilized quantitative genetics and genomics to investigate the mutation underlying white coloration in the common leopard gecko. By sequencing the genomes of geckos in a large breeding colony and conducting genetic linkage analysis, the Lemon Frost mutation was localized to a single locus containing the candidate gene SPINT1.

Development and genetics of red coloration in the zebrafish relative Danio albolineatus

Delai Huang et al.

Summary: In Danio fishes, pearl danio's erythrophores share a common progenitor with xanthophores and maintain plasticity in cell fate even after differentiation, while predominant ketocarotenoids that confer red coloration to erythrophores have been identified. The study is a first step toward defining the mechanisms underlying the development of erythrophore-mediated red coloration in Danio, showing parallels with the mechanism of red coloration in birds.
