Comparison of the microbial communities of alpacas and sheep fed diets with three different ratios of corn stalk to concentrate

Ruimin Chao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of ruminal microbial communities of alpacas and sheep fed different ratios of roughage to concentrate, finding differences in microbial communities between the two species. Alpacas displayed higher digestibility of poor-quality roughage and lower methane production compared to sheep, partially explained by differences in their forestomach microbial communities. The adverse effects of high-concentrate diets were also found to be less pronounced in alpacas than in sheep.

Assessment of clinical and microbiota responses to fecal microbial transplantation in adult horses with diarrhea

Caroline A. McKinney et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) in treating horses with colitis, showing that FMT treatment can reduce diarrhea scores and improve the normalization of their microbiome. The microbiome of healthy horses differed by location, while improved fecal consistency was associated with higher microbial diversity.

A journey through 50 years of research relevant to the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminant livestock and thoughts on future directions

John S. Gilleard et al.

Summary: Over the past 50 years, there have been significant research advances in ruminant livestock gastrointestinal nematode control, primarily using broad-spectrum anthelmintic drugs. However, with the emergence of anthelmintic drug resistance, the importance of non-pharmaceutical control strategies such as immunology, vaccine development, epidemiological modeling, and other alternative methods is increasing.
