Cell wall biology of the moss Physcomitrium patens

Zheng-Hua Ye et al.

Summary: This review provides an updated overview of cell wall biology in the moss Physcomitrium patens. The cell walls of P. patens primarily consist of cellulose, hemicelluloses, pectin, and glycoproteins, and their abundance differs among cell types and at different developmental stages. The conservation of cell wall biosynthesis genes between P. patens and vascular plants suggests that the common ancestor of mosses and vascular plants had already acquired the machinery for synthesizing various cell wall polymers. Furthermore, homologs of phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway genes, although not involved in lignin synthesis, play a role in cuticle formation. Further genetic and biochemical studies in P. patens are expected to provide insights into the evolutionary history of plant cell wall structure and biosynthesis.

Identification of xylan arabinosyl 2-O-xylosyltransferases catalyzing the addition of 2-O-xylosyl residue onto arabinosyl side chains of xylan in grass species

Ruiqin Zhong et al.

Summary: In this study, the rice OsXAXT1 gene was found to catalyze xylosyl transfer onto xylan to form Xyl-Araf disaccharide side chains. The function of OsXAXT1 was confirmed through mutagenesis experiments in transgenic rice plants. Furthermore, homologous genes of XAXT1 with the same function were identified in other grass species.

Functional analysis of GT61 glycosyltransferases from grass species in xylan substitutions

Ruiqin Zhong et al.

Summary: Multiple members of the rice GT61 family were identified as xylan arabinosyltransferases (XATs) involved in 3-O-arabinosylation of xylan in grass species. Additionally, homologs of XATs and xylan 2-O-xylosyltransferases (XYXTs) in maize, sorghum, Brachypodium, and switchgrass were also found to exhibit similar activities, indicating evolutionary conservation of these functions in grass species.
