Abscisic acid is involved in several processes associated with root system architecture in maize

Ivan Friero et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that ABA inhibits primary root elongation and lateral root density in maize, while auxin inhibits primary root elongation but increases lateral root density. The combined treatment of ABA and auxin can reverse the inhibitory effect of ABA on lateral root density. The inhibitory effect of ABA on lateral root primordia formation depends on the developmental stage.

Mitochondria as a target and central hub of energy division during cold stress in insects

Jan Lubawy et al.

Summary: Temperature stress is a crucial factor in determining the geographical distribution of insect species. Mitochondria play an important role in the response to cold stress, with changes in their activity and morphology. These changes may trigger apoptosis to protect the organism from chill injuries. However, the observed modifications vary depending on experimental conditions and insect species.

The Plant Anaphase-Promoting Complex/Cyclosome

Alex Willems et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the plant APC/C complex, discussing its importance in plant development and its association with different developmental processes. The interactions between plant-specific APC/C activator subunits and other subunits are also described. Finally, a comprehensive list of confirmed and suspected plant APC/C target proteins is provided, offering opportunities to manipulate APC/C activity for increased crop yield and improved resilience to climate change.

Abscisic acid insensitive 4 interacts with ICE1 and JAZ proteins to regulate ABA signaling-mediated cold tolerance in apple

Jian-Ping An et al.

Summary: In this study, it was demonstrated that the AP2/ERF family protein MdABI4 integrates jasmonic acid and abscisic acid signals to modulate cold tolerance through the JAZ-ABI4-ICE1-CBF regulatory cascade in apple. Furthermore, the negative modulation of MdABI4-improved cold tolerance by MdJAZ1 and MdJAZ2 was found to be through interference with the interaction between MdABI4 and MdICE1 proteins. These findings provide insights into the crosstalk between jasmonic acid and abscisic acid signals in response to cold stress.

Heat shock-induced cold acclimation in cucumber through CsHSFA1d-activated JA biosynthesis and signaling

Chuandong Qi et al.

Summary: This study reveals that heat shock induces cold acclimation in cucumber seedlings through the involvement of the heat-shock transcription factor HSFA1d. Heat shock and cold treatment both enhance CsHSFA1d expression, and CsHSFA1d transcripts accumulate more under cold treatment after a heat-shock pre-treatment. Overexpression of CsHSFA1d improves cucumber's tolerance for cold stress, while CsHSFA1d knockdown lines are more sensitive. Additionally, both the overexpression of CsHSFA1d and heat-shock pre-treatment increase the endogenous jasmonic acid (JA) content in cucumber seedlings after cold treatment, and exogenous application of JA rescues the cold-sensitive phenotype of CsHSFA1d knockdown lines.

The floral repressors TEMPRANILLO1 and 2 modulate salt tolerance by regulating hormonal components and photo-protection in Arabidopsis

Michela Osnato et al.

Summary: Members of the plant-specific RAV family of transcription factors, TEM1 and TEM2, play crucial roles in regulating phase changes and abiotic stress responses in Arabidopsis thaliana. TEM overexpressing plants were hypersensitive to salt stress, while tem1 tem2 double mutants showed increased tolerance. Additionally, tem1 tem2 mutants exhibited faster germination and flowering, delayed leaf senescence, and enhanced antioxidant capacity compared to wild-type plants under salt stress conditions.

Posttranslational regulation of multiple clock-related transcription factors triggers cold-inducible gene expression in Arabidopsis

Satoshi Kidokoro et al.

Summary: Cold stress induces changes in gene expression in plants, with DREB1 genes being activated under such conditions. Proteins related to the plant circadian clock are found to be transferred to the nucleus under cold stress, acting as direct transcriptional activators for DREB1. Posttranslational regulation of clock-related transcription factors is identified as the trigger for cold-inducible gene expression, revealing the complex relationship between the plant circadian clock and cold stress response mechanisms.

A perspective on cell proliferation kinetics in the root apical meristem

Benedicte Desvoyes et al.

Summary: Organogenesis in plants relies on a balance between cell division and expansion, with the root serving as an ideal model to study cell proliferation. Cell proliferation activity is mainly restricted to the root apical meristem, and a combination of new tools, experimental strategies, and mathematical models has enhanced our understanding of cell proliferation in the RAM. Further research is needed to explore additional aspects of cell proliferation in plants.

Mitochondrial redox systems as central hubs in plant metabolism and signaling

Olivier Van Aken

Summary: This review provides an update on the latest research concerning the organization and operation of plant mitochondrial redox systems and their impact on cellular metabolism, plant development, and stress responses. Plant mitochondria are tightly integrated with photosynthesis, photorespiration, and cytosolic metabolism, providing redox-balancing and influencing responses to environmental challenges and pathogen threats.
