Architecture and Dynamics of the Wounding-Induced Gene Regulatory Network During the Oolong Tea Manufacturing Process (Camellia sinensis)

Yucheng Zheng et al.

Summary: Understanding the extensive transcriptional reprogramming events induced by wounding during oolong tea manufacturing process is crucial for improving tea quality. In this study, the high-resolution transcriptomic and metabolomic data of wounding-treated tea leaves were systematically analyzed at 11 time points. The results revealed that wounding rapidly activates transcriptional activity within 10 minutes and the temporal expression patterns can be classified into 18 clusters with distinct biological processes. Transcription factor activity linked to TF binding motif plays a role in specific biological processes within different clusters. Moreover, the study highlights the scientific significance of allowing for resting period after wounding treatment during the actual manufacturing process of oolong tea.

Changes in Non-Volatile and Volatile Metabolites Associated with Heterosis in Tea Plants (Camellia sinensis)

Pengjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified non-volatile and volatile metabolites in Camellia sinensis hybrids and their parents, and found that non-additive nucleotides, alkaloids, organic acids, and tannins contribute to positive heterosis in hybrids, while catechins and free amino acids show negative heterosis. Additionally, non-additive terpenes and other volatiles contribute to the aroma of tea plant hybrids. These non-additive metabolites play an important role in the formation of desirable breeding traits for hybrids.

Single-parent expression complementation contributes to phenotypic heterosis in maize hybrids

Jutta A. Baldauf et al.

Summary: The study found that single-parent expression complementation (SPE) results in approximately 700 additional active genes in genetically diverse maize hybrids. The number of SPE genes is significantly associated with mid-parent heterosis (MPH) for all surveyed phenotypic traits. Maternally and paternally active SPE genes are highly correlated within each SPE type but separated between these two SPE types. SPE_B patterns are associated with growth and development, while SPE_X patterns are enriched in defense and stress response.

Summary: This study provides insights into the transcriptomic and translatomic variation and regulatory mechanisms in maize by analyzing the expression and translation patterns of B73, Mo17, and their F-1 hybrid. The results show an elevated nonadditive effect in the translatome and a switch from additive to nonadditive gene expression in the translated subgenome maize1 genes. The study also reveals different expression patterns and changes in dominant isoforms between the transcriptome and translatome, which may be associated with heterosis in maize.
