Seasonal variations in macrofauna distribution according to the distance from a herbaceous strip in a Mediterranean alley cropping plot

Camille D'Hervilly et al.

Summary: The study found that the effects of different shading treatments on soil macrofauna varied seasonally. In spring, most soil macrofauna had higher densities in the herbaceous strip than in the crop alley, while in early summer, this trend was mainly visible for earthworms, Diplopoda, and adult Coleoptera. In autumn, higher densities in the herbaceous strip were only significant for certain types of earthworms, while other categories of macrofauna showed similar densities at all distances from the herbaceous strip.

Improvement of the soil properties, nutrients, and carbon stocks in different cereal-legume agroforestry systems

A. Abbasi Surki et al.

Summary: The study found that the soil organic carbon content in agroforestry systems was mainly influenced by the trees, with higher carbon stocks observed at a distance of 0.5 meters from the trees. Although there was no significant difference in nitrogen amounts between systems, agroforestry plots provided more phosphorus and potassium for the next crop, promising a more sustainable agriculture in the future.

Root traits as drivers of plant and ecosystem functioning: current understanding, pitfalls and future research needs

Gregoire T. Freschet et al.

Summary: Based on a review of various aspects in plant physiology and ecology, it is evident that there are complex relationships between root traits and functions, with many knowledge gaps still remaining. Future research should focus on considering a more comprehensive range of functionally relevant traits across different species, environments and time series in order to establish causal hierarchical links among root traits.

Root positioning and trait shifts in Hibbertia racemosa as dependent on its neighbour's nutrient-acquisition strategy

Patricia de Britto Costa et al.

Summary: Nutrient-poor ecosystems globally support high plant diversity, with facilitation among plants with different nutrient-acquisition strategies playing a key role in promoting co-existence. In this study, it was found that focal plants adjust their root system architecture and nutrient allocation when grown in proximity to neighbors with contrasting nutrient strategies, potentially enhancing nutrient uptake.

Assessing new sensor-based volume measurement methods for high-throughput bulk density estimation in the field under various soil conditions

Guillaume Coulouma et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the photogrammetric technique (SfM) as a rapid, accurate method of measuring undisturbed soil volume for bulk density (BD) measurements. The results showed that the BD measured by SfM was significantly similar to that measured by core sampling, indicating the suitability of SfM for stony soils.

Decomposition and temperature sensitivity of fine root and leaf litter of 43 mediterranean species

Giuliano Bonanomi et al.

Summary: This study compared the chemical traits, decomposition rate, and temperature sensitivity of root and leaf litter of 43 Mediterranean species. Results showed that fine root litter had lower N content, higher lignin concentration, and slower decay rate compared to leaf litter. Q10 values were higher for fine root litter, positively correlated with lignin concentration.

Plant rhizodeposition: A key factor for soil organic matter formation in stable fractions

Sebastian H. Villarino et al.

Summary: The formation of soil organic carbon is poorly understood, with uncertainties remaining for the contributions of different inputs to the particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon fractions. Rhizodeposition has the highest efficiency in forming MAOC, while root biomass inputs have the highest efficiency in forming POC. Rhizodeposition and roots play opposite but complementary roles in building MAOC and POC fractions.

Spatial heterogeneity of soil quality within a Mediterranean alley cropping agroforestry system: Comparison with a monocropping system

Esther Guillot et al.

Summary: Alley cropping agroforestry systems were found to improve soil quality compared to monocropping systems, especially in terms of microbiological soil quality indicators. The introduction of tree rows in the system led to spatial heterogeneity in chemical indicators, microbial biomass, activities, and community structure at the plot scale. The overall soil quality index of the entire alley cropping plot significantly increased relative to the monocropping plot after 21 years of agroforestry practice.
