Cellular and molecular characterizations of the irregular internode division zone formation of a slow-growing bamboo variant

Zhipeng Gao et al.

Summary: This study discovered a bamboo variant called sgv, which exhibits irregular growth in internodes, and revealed the molecular mechanisms behind it. Transcriptome sequencing analysis found that genes related to cell wall biogenesis and cell division were significantly downregulated in the internode division zone of sgv, while defects in the brassinosteroid signaling pathway might be the cause of these irregularities.

MicroRNAs play important roles in regulating the rapid growth of the Phyllostachys edulis culm internode

Kai-Li Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the F4 segment at the bottom of the moso bamboo internode had actively dividing cells and higher levels of auxin and cytokinin, while the F1 segment at the top had lower levels. RNA-seq analysis showed that genes related to DNA replication and cell division were highly expressed in F4. A total of 63 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were identified, and these DEMs regulated downstream transcription factors and hormonal response genes, with several miRNA-target interactions validated through tobacco co-infiltration.

Karrikins control seedling photomorphogenesis and anthocyanin biosynthesis through a HY5-BBX transcriptional module

Katharina Bursch et al.

Summary: The butenolide molecule karrikin (KAR) enhances light responses in Arabidopsis through a signaling pathway involving KAI2, MAX2, SMAX1, SMXL2, HY5, BBX20, and BBX21. This pathway is responsible for regulating hypocotyl elongation and anthocyanin accumulation, with the HY5-BBX module playing a crucial role in mediating these responses. Light- and KAR-dependent signaling intersect at the HY5-BBX transcriptional module.

A regulatory network driving shoot lignification in rapidly growing bamboo

Kebin Yang et al.

Summary: An integrated analysis was conducted to study the regulatory mechanism of lignification in moso bamboo, revealing upregulated genes associated with cell wall and lignin biosynthesis and a regulatory network including miRNAs, transcription factors, and enzyme genes. Overexpression of PeLAC20 in transgenic Arabidopsis plants increased lignin content, suggesting the involvement of a reliable miRNA-mediated MYB-PeLAC20 module in lignin monomer polymerization. Our findings provide insights into the genetic regulation of bamboo lignification and potential strategies for improving bamboo timber properties.

Joonghyuk Park et al.

Summary: The study reveals that CYTOKININ-RESPONSIVE GROWTH REGULATOR (CKG) is a key factor in regulating plant cell expansion and cell cycle progression, with overexpression of CKG promoting cell size increase and entry into the S phase of the cell cycle, enhancing organ growth at various growth stages.

Multi-analysis of sheath senescence provides new insights into bamboo shoot development at the fast growth stage

Ming Chen et al.

Summary: Sheath senescence is a complex process during bamboo shoot development, involving chloroplast corruption, chlorophyll degradation, and water loss. Reactove oxygen species, salicylic acid, and abscisic acid accumulate in the senescing sheath. Hexokinase genes may trigger sheath senescence, while sugar accumulation in the sheath possibly plays a role in initiating this process. These findings provide new insights into the regulation of sheath senescence and its relationship with internode growth during bamboo shoot development.
