Scale-free aggregation and interface fluctuations of cancer clusters in cancer-endothelial cell mixtures: From the dilute state to confluent monolayer

Chun-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation shows that cancer cells aggregate into clusters with fractal boundaries and self-similar power-law distribution of single cluster areas as waiting time increases, due to their higher motility and weaker cohesive couplings compared to endothelial cells. Multiple-scale turbulentlike motion and interactions with surrounding cells are key factors for the complex spatial fluctuations and fractal structure of cancer cell clusters. The larger the cancer cell cluster, the stronger the longer-length fluctuations, leading to increased fractal dimension and scaling exponents of cluster boundaries.

Topological data analysis of collective and individual epithelial cells using persistent homology of loops

Dhananjay Bhaskar et al.

Summary: Topological data analysis (TDA) is an unsupervised machine learning method used to analyze active systems. The study demonstrates the robustness of topological loops to variations in particle number and density. This approach can be applied to analyze systems ranging from cytoskeletal motors to motile cells to flocking or swarming animals.
