Regulation of cell attachment, spreading, and migration by hydrogel substrates with independently tunable mesh size

Jing Xia et al.

Summary: Hydrogels are widely used in studying cell-microenvironment interactions. In addition to stiffness, the mesh size of hydrogels also plays a significant role in regulating cell behavior. This study independently investigates the role of mesh size in cell behavior.

Mathematical models of neuronal growth

Hadrien Oliveri et al.

Summary: The establishment of a functioning neuronal network involves the migration, growth, and morphogenesis of neurites, which rely on multiple biophysical effects and sensory cues. Mathematical models are useful for testing hypotheses and understanding the underlying mechanisms of neuron development. This review focuses on different mathematical models for neurite growth and morphogenesis, emphasizing mechanics and mechanisms and simple analytical treatment.

Actin Stress Fibers Response and Adaptation under Stretch

Roberto Bernal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of peripheral stress fibers in mammalian cells to external stretch. The study finds that an adapted response occurs near the focal adhesion sites, depending on the type of mechanical stress applied. A model is proposed to analyze the effect of stretch on the mechanics of the stress fibers and relevant parameters of the healing process are obtained. Additionally, the study shows that compression leads to a reorganization of actin material in the stress fibers, with the amount of applied strain affecting the repair of actin bundles.

The cytoskeleton as a modulator of tension driven axon elongation

Sara C. Sousa et al.

Summary: During development, neurons undergo polarization and axon growth, which require the integration of external and internal signals. Membrane remodeling and cytoskeleton dynamics play crucial roles in guiding growth cone advancement and axon elongation. After synaptic establishment, the organism's growth leads to an increased distance between neuronal cell bodies and targets.

Theory for Durotactic Axon Guidance

Hadrien Oliveri et al.

Summary: During nervous system development, neurons extend axon bundles that form neuronal networks by meeting other neurons. The migration and guidance of these bundles rely on external cues and can be modeled by rigidity gradients using morphoelastic rods theory. At rigidity interfaces, the motion of axon bundles can be likened to optical ray theory, following Snell's law, indicating guidance similar to optical lenses and fibers created by regions of different stiffnesses.
