Electronic transport through molecules containing pyrimidine units: First-principles calculations

G. R. Berdiyorov et al.

Summary: The quantum transport through molecular junctions containing pyrimidine units characterized by a permanent dipole moment was studied using density functional theory and Green's functional formalism. The presence of pyrimidine rings enhanced the current through the junctions for both polarities of the applied voltage, showing clear current rectification due to the polar nature of the molecules. The effect of the dihedral angle between phenyl and pyrimidine rings on current rectification was also explored, with results explained in terms of charge localization in the system discovered through transmission eigenvalues analysis. These findings can aid in understanding the role of polar self-assembled monolayers in interface engineering.

Effect of anchoring groups on the electronic transport properties of biphenyl and phenyl-pyridine molecules

G. R. Berdiyorov et al.

Summary: Single-molecule quantum transport calculations were performed for biphenyl and phenyl-pyridine molecules asymmetrically anchored to gold electrodes via different edge groups, revealing clear current rectification depending on the edge group of the molecules. Among the considered structures, 4-mercaptophenyl-2,6-dithiolpyridine and 40-mercaptomethyl-4-thiol-biphenyl molecules showed the best diode parameters.
