Latest trends on photodynamic disinfection of Gram-negative bacteria: photosensitizer's structure and delivery systems

Nidia Maldonado-Carmona et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance poses a threat to medical advances, with multidrug-resistant strains of previously eradicated infectious diseases resurging, particularly among Gram-negative strains. Photodynamic Antimicrobial ChemoTherapy utilizes toxic reactive oxygen species generated in the presence of light, oxygen, and a photosensitizer molecule for disinfection, offering a promising alternative to chemical agents. By harnessing light-driven reactive species, the potential of tolerance to antimicrobial treatment can be reduced, providing a potential solution to combat Gram-negative bacteria.
