Effects of essential oil components exposure on biological parameters of Caenorhabditis elegans

Cristina Fuentes et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the toxicity of four widely used essential oil components on nematodes and found that these compounds had a concentration-dependent effect on nematode survival at moderate to high concentrations, with reproduction being a more sensitive endpoint for toxicity evaluation. The findings suggest that these compounds can be toxic at lower doses than those required for their biological action.

Moroccan entomopathogenic nematodes as potential biocontrol agents against Dactylopius opuntiae (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae)

Mohamed El Aalaoui et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of two nematode species, Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, against the prickly pear cochineal pest. It found that S. feltiae was more effective in causing higher mortality rates. This is the first report of using nematodes to control D. opuntiae, and in addition to nematodes, dl-limonene was also found to be effective.

Hemiterpene compound, 3,3-dimethylallyl alcohol promotes longevity and neuroprotection inCaenorhabditis elegans

Suresh Chandra Phulara et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Prenol could significantly extend the lifespan of C. elegans and alleviate protein aggregation. By activating specific genes and transcription factors, Prenol improved stress tolerance and health-span of the worms. These findings suggest that small molecules like Prenol could be explored as potential therapeutics against aging and age-related conditions.

Curcumin Acetylsalicylate Extends the Lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans

Lei Zhou et al.

Summary: The novel compound curcumin acetylsalicylate (CA) was found to extend the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans in a dose-dependent manner, decrease oxidative stress, and increase the expression of antioxidative genes. Activation of the DAF-16 transcription factor by CA may contribute to delaying aging in C. elegans.

Identification and delineation of action mechanism of antifungal agents: Reveromycin E and its new derivative isolated from Streptomyces sp. JCK-6141

Hang Thi Thu Nguyen et al.

Summary: Streptomyces species, particularly Reveromycin E and its derivative, have shown broad-spectrum antifungal activities against postharvest fungal diseases. The compounds exhibited stronger efficacy at acidic conditions and were able to suppress gray mold and blue mold on fruits caused by Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium italicum. Computational studies suggested that the compounds tend to bind the catalytic domain of IleRS, highlighting their potential as microbial fungicides for postharvest disease control.

Summary: Studies suggest that oxidative damage caused by free radicals can affect lifespan, with ROS levels and oxidative damage inversely correlated with longevity across different species. However, experiments have shown some contradictory results, indicating a complex relationship between ROS and lifespan.

Nematicidal Activity of Grammicin Biosynthesis Pathway Intermediates in Xylaria grammica KCTC 13121BP against Meloidogyne incognita

Yoon Jee Kim et al.

Summary: Grammicin, a polyketide metabolite produced by the endolichenic fungus Xylaria grammica KCTC 13121BP, shows strong nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne incognita. The biosynthesis pathway of grammicin overlaps with that of patulin, with toluquinol showing high nematocidal activity similar to grammicin. Toluquinol can be a potential lead molecule for new synthetic nematicides in controlling root-knot nematode diseases.

PLIP 2021: expanding the scope of the protein-ligand interaction profiler to DNA and RNA

Melissa F. Adasme et al.

Summary: With the growth of protein structure data, the analysis of molecular interactions between ligands and their target molecules becomes increasingly important. PLIP, a tool for protein-ligand interaction profiling, has been successful in detecting and visualizing these interactions, with applications ranging from characterizing docking experiments to evaluating novel ligand-protein complexes. Additionally, PLIP has been extended to encompass interactions with DNA and RNA, demonstrating its utility in scenarios such as cancer drug targeting DNA and RNA-protein complexes associated with neurological diseases.
