TWO KEY VOLATILES OF CHINESE WHITE PINE (PINUS ARMANDII) (PINALES: PINACEAE: PINOIDEAE) PHLOEM RESIST INVASION BY CHINESE WHITE PINE BEETLE (DENDROCTONUS ARMANDII) (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE: SCOLYTINAE)

M. Zhao et al.

Summary: This study detected the changes in volatile compounds in Pinus armandii phloem at each stage of infestation by Dendroctonus armandii, and revealed the defensive system of the phloem. It also found differences in the resistance of males and females to the volatiles and the toxicity of different compounds to D. armandii.

Single amino acid variations drive functional divergence of cytochrome P450s in Helicoverpa species

Yu Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the functional divergence of genes in Helicoverpa armigera and related species by exchanging amino acids in the substrate recognition sites. The results show that a single amino acid substitution can alter substrate metabolism, providing insights into the process of natural selection of P450 genes and their role in insect-host plant interactions.

Knockdown of CYP6CR2 and CYP6DE5 reduces tolerance to host plant allelochemicals in the Chinese white pine beetle Dendroctonus armandi

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: This study sequenced and characterized two CYP6 genes from Chinese white pine beetle and revealed their expression characteristics and functions. The expression of these genes varied significantly in different developmental stages and tissues, and was significantly induced after feeding on pine phloem or exposure to terpenoids. Silencing these genes increased sensitivity to terpenoids and led to a significant increase in adult mortality.

Knockdown of CYP301B1 and CYP6AX1v2 increases the susceptibility of the brown planthopper to beta-asarone, a potential plant-derived insecticide

Xueliang Xu et al.

Summary: The cytochrome P450 monooxygenases of insects play crucial roles in the metabolic detoxification of insecticides, with CYP301B1 showing highest expression in eggs and CYP6AX1v2 in macropterous female adults in BPH. Silencing CYP301B1 and CYP6AX1v2 separately increases sensitivity and mortality of BPH following treatment with beta-asarone, indicating their potential role in detoxification metabolism.

Disruption of the cytochrome P450 CYP6BQ7 gene reduces tolerance to plant toxicants in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum

Yuan-chen Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the CYP6BQ7 gene in Tribolium castaneum plays a key role in detoxifying plant toxicants, with its expression induced by Artemisia vulgaris essential oil. Higher expression in larval and adult stages, particularly in the brain and hemolymph, suggests pivotal involvement in detoxification. RNA interference silencing of TcCYP6BQ7 increased larvae mortality in response to essential oil, indicating its importance in detoxification.

Functional analysis of CYP6AE68, a cytochrome P450 gene associated with indoxacarb resistance in Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Wen-Tao Hou et al.

Summary: Spodoptera litura is a widely distributed, highly polyphagous pest that has developed resistance to various insecticides. This study found that elevated cytochrome P450 monooxygenase enzyme activity, particularly the overexpression of the novel gene CYP6AE68, in populations with resistance to indoxacarb may play a significant role in detoxification processes.

Summary: Despite the implementation of environmentally compatible integrated control strategies, such as mating disruption and attract-kill strategies, the management of codling moth still heavily relies on insecticides. There have been varying levels of insecticide resistance towards different types of insecticides in codling moth populations worldwide, involving both metabolic and target-site mechanisms.

Cytochromes P450: terpene detoxification and pheromone production in bark beetles

Gary J. Blomquist et al.

Summary: Bark beetles in the Dendroctonus and Ips genera are the most destructive forest pests in the Northern hemisphere, utilizing cytochromes P450 to detoxify tree-produced terpenes and produce pheromones. Different species within these genera use specific chemicals, such as trans-verbenol and ipsdienol, as aggregation pheromones.

Identification of the Short Neuropeptide F and Short Neuropeptide F Receptor Genes and Their Roles of Food Intake in Dendroctonus armandi

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: The Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi, is a destructive pest of coniferous forests in the middle Qinling Mountains of China. Research has shown that its food intake is regulated by the sNPF signaling pathway, and RNA interference knockdown of sNPF and sNPFR significantly increased mortality, reduced food intake, and body weight.
