Resistance Allele Frequency to Cry1Ab and Vip3Aa20 in Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Louisiana and Three Other Southeastern US States

Shucong Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that the resistance allele frequency (RAF) to Cry1Ab maize was high in H. zea populations, while no functional major resistance allele to Vip3Aa20 maize was detected, although functional minor alleles were not uncommon.

Resistance of the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda, to transgenicBacillus thuringiensisCry1F corn in the Americas: lessons and implications for Bt corn IRM in China

Fangneng Huang

Summary: The fall armyworm, a major pest of Bt crops in North and South America, has recently invaded Africa and Asia, including China, posing a threat to food security. The resistance of S. frugiperda to Cry1F corn has been widely observed in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, and the United States due to various factors such as limited modes of action and cross-resistance among Bt proteins. Strategies for integrated resistance management in China include using high dose traits, monitoring resistance, employing gene pyramiding, and avoiding planting Bt corn in areas where armyworms overwinter. Lessons from global Bt crop use can be valuable for improving resistance management programs in the Americas and promoting sustainable Bt corn technology in China.

Dominance and fitness costs of insect resistance to genetically modified Bacillus thuringiensis crops

Fangneng Huang

Summary: The evolution of resistance to genetically modified Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops poses a major threat to their sustainability, with a majority of resistance cases being functionally non-recessive and lacking fitness costs. Cases with field control problems have significantly higher dominance levels, and the prevalence of non-recessive resistance plays a crucial role in the evolution of resistance to Bt crops worldwide.

Extended investigation of field-evolved resistance of the corn earworm Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 proteins in the southeastern United States

Wenbo Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that the corn earworm in certain areas of the southeastern United States has developed resistance to pyramided Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2, with resistance to Cry1A.105 appearing to have plateaued while selection for Cry2Ab2 resistance is still ongoing. Effective measures need to be developed and implemented to mitigate the resistance and ensure the sustainable use of Bt crop biotechnology.
