Summary: T. gallinae and T. gallinarum are pathogenic avian parasites that infect a wide range of bird species. Conventional PCR assays cannot differentiate the genus or species of trichomonads, but our duplex real-time PCR assay can simultaneously detect and differentiate T. gallinarum and T. gallinae.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of trichomonads in the upper alimentary tract of Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed sea eagles, detecting Trichomonas spp. genomic sequences through PCR and culture. Morphologic and molecular characterizations confirmed all isolates as T. gypaetinii, and novel gene sequences were provided. This is the first study to isolate T. gypaetinii from Haliaeetus eagles, showing that T. gypaetinii belong to independent clusters from other Trichomonas spp.

Summary: Avian trichomonosis is an important parasitic disease affecting Bonelli's eagles, with this study revealing the prevalence, severity of lesions, and association with different MLS types. The research found that nest-raised chicks in the wild are at higher risk for infection and development of lesions. Discordances in sample testing methods were also noted, with swab-ITS-PCR showing greater sensitivity in detecting the parasite.
