Attempts at generating metathesis-active Fe(IV) and Co(IV) complexes via the reactions of (silox)2M(THF)2, [(silox)3M][Na(THF)2] (M = Fe, Co), and related species with propellanes and triphenylboron

Gregory M. M. George et al.

Summary: This article presents the metathetical syntheses of a series of complexes and X-ray structural studies of some of them. However, the reactivity of these complexes towards 1.1.1propellane and 1,3-dehydroadamantane did not yield the expected results. The best outcome observed was catalytic ring-opening to 3-exo-methylene cyclobutylidene.

A Crystalline Iron Terminal Methylidene

Sadig Aghazada et al.

Summary: Iron methylidene species are important intermediates in the Fischer-Tropsch process and olefin cyclopropanation. In this study, an iron terminal methylidene complex has been characterized and its electronic structure validated. Computational analysis shows high Fe = CH2 bond covalency, considerable double bond order, and substantial alkylidene character in the complex.

Propellanes as Drop-In ROMP Initiators

Gregory M. George et al.

Summary: The addition of 1.1.1-propellane (111P) to (Ph3P)(3)MCl2 (M = Ru, Os) yielded 3-exo-methylenecycloalkylidene complexes capable of ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene. Phosphine substitution and self-metathesis reactions further demonstrated the reactivity of these complexes towards norbornene. The use of C-13-labeled 111P* allowed for the identification of multiple alkylidene resonances in C-13 NMR spectra.

Yuta Kawamoto et al.

Summary: Vanadium(V) arylimido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) alkyl complexes and perhalophenoxy substituted alkylidenes have been prepared and shown to exhibit high catalytic activities in the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene. The perhalophenoxy derivatives demonstrated superior activities with turnover frequencies up to 208 s^(-1) and cis-syndiotactic stereoregularity up to 98% in the resulting polymers.

Synthesis of Vanadium Oxo Alkylidene Complex and Its Reactivity in Ring-Closing Olefin Metathesis Reactions

Dmitry S. Belov et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of a catalytically active V oxo alkylidene, VO(CHSiMe3)(PEt3)(2)Cl, which shows the highest reported productivity with various terminal olefins in ring-closing metathesis reactions among known V catalysts. Theoretical studies suggest that the beta-hydride elimination pathway is significantly disfavored for V oxo species, which may have important implications for future applications in this field.
