Trends in prophylactic antibiotic use for tooth extraction from 2015 to 2018 in Japan: An analysis using a health insurance claims database

Summary: This study investigated patterns of antibiotic prophylaxis for tooth extraction in Japan using a health insurance claims database. The findings suggest that efforts are needed to reduce potentially inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions for low-risk patients in dental clinics following the initiation of the National Action Plan.

Clinico-statistical survey of oral antimicrobial prophylaxis and surgical site infection regarding ordinary tooth extraction and mandibular wisdom tooth extraction in the dental outpatient clinic

Summary: The study found that the use of oral antibiotics decreased in ordinary tooth extraction procedures, but the rate of surgical site infections did not change. Similarly, in mandibular wisdom tooth extraction procedures, there was a decrease in the preoperative use of third-generation cephalosporins and an increase in the use of penicillin, with no change in SSI rates. The duration of oral antibiotic use was slightly reduced to two days, with no significant difference in SSI rates between two and three-day durations.

Antibiotics to prevent complications following tooth extractions
