Parallel directional coupler based dual-polarization electro-absorption modulator using epsilon near-zero material

Tanmay Bhowmik et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel dual-polarization electro-absorption modulator based on epsilon-near-zero material is proposed for independent and synchronized modulation of different modes. The modulator has a polarization-insensitive nature and exhibits low insertion losses and high modulation bandwidth over the entire wavelength range. The design can find potential applications in PDM-enabled integrated photonics systems and high-speed optical interconnections at data center networks.

Infrared-blocking plasmonic meta-glass for energy-saving passive windows

Ashish Kumar Chowdhary et al.

Summary: Passive windows that can block infrared radiation and transmit visible light simultaneously have the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption in cooling and lighting systems. This Letter presents a design of plasmonic meta-glass that can block a high percentage of infrared radiation while maintaining a decent level of visible light transmission. The design features a polarization-independent array of tungsten nanorings, and the transmission spectrum can be tailored by adjusting the dimensions of the nanorings.

Active optical metasurfaces: comprehensive review on physics, mechanisms, and prospective applications

Jingyi Yang et al.

Summary: Optical metasurfaces with subwavelength thickness have the ability to control the phase, amplitude, and polarization of light, making them promising for fundamental optics and optical applications. Introducing active functionalities to these metasurfaces is essential for the development of next-generation flat optical components and devices. Attempts have been made to develop tunable optical metasurfaces with dynamic control of optical properties and early-stage device functions using novel active materials and tunable mechanisms. Although these active metasurfaces show promise for practical applications, significant challenges remain. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recently-reported tunable metasurfaces and compares their capabilities and limitations for various photonic applications.

All-dielectric multifunctional transmittance-tunable metasurfaces based on guided-mode resonance and ENZ effect

Xiaoming Qiu et al.

Summary: Electrically tunable all-dielectric metasurface structures have been proposed in this study, combining indium tin oxide with guided-mode resonance to disturb the resonance wavelength in the near-infrared spectral range. The research found that in a one-dimensional structure, the transmittances at 1512 and 1510 nm changed by 20 and -14 dB, respectively, under bias voltages of 0 to 5 V, with the bilayer structure performing well in double-waveband applications.

Polarization- and angle-insensitive ultrabroadband perfect metamaterial absorber for thermophotovoltaics

Ashish Kumar Chowdhary et al.

Summary: The study presents an ultrabroadband perfect metamaterial absorber with an unprecedented average absorbance of around 99% in the 300 to 4500 nm spectral range. The design is polarization-independent and angle-insensitive, making it a potential candidate for thermophotovoltaics in solar energy harvesting.

Ultra-broadband spatial light modulation with dual-resonance coupled epsilon-near-zero materials

Qin Chen et al.

Summary: A dual-resonance light coupling scheme is proposed in this work to achieve an almost one order-of-magnitude improvement in modulation depth-bandwidth product. By optimizing the dual-resonance configuration, decent light modulation can be obtained within a large operation wavelength band covering two resonances.

Optical Modulation via Guided-Mode Resonance in an ITO-Loaded Distributed Bragg Reflector Topped With a Two-Dimensional Grating

Sare Vatani et al.

Summary: The study presents the design procedure for a narrow-band ultra-low-power reflective optical modulator utilizing a three-layer stack of ITO/HfO2/ITO. By operating between a distributed Bragg reflector and a two-dimensional grating, the modulator achieves high modulation depth, low insertion loss, and ultra-low energy consumption, paving the way for next-generation optical modulators.
