Role of unit-cell defects in terahertz topological ring resonators

Sambhu Jana et al.

Summary: We demonstrate a terahertz topological ring resonator based on all-dielectric valley photonic crystals. The resonator exhibits ultra-narrowband high quality (Q)-factor resonances, and the introduction of multiple defect states causes a resonance redshift and alters the effective refractive indices of the structure. This research has implications for nonlinear technologies and other advanced on-chip topological devices at THz frequencies.

Multimode interference in topological photonic heterostructure

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes topological photonic heterostructures composed of finite-size photonic crystals with different topological phases. Coupled topological edge states (CTESs) resulting from the coupling between topological edge states are discovered. The finite element method is used to predict and investigate the multimode interference effect of CTESs. Paired and symmetrical interferences are discussed, and the respective imaging positions are calculated. The multimode interference effect is topologically protected when introducing disorders. As an application example, frequency and power splitters based on the multimode interference effect of topological edge states are designed and demonstrated numerically, paving a new way for designing topological photonic integrated circuit applications.

Extended topological valley-locked surface acoustic waves

Ji-Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The authors provide experimental evidence for extended topological valley-locked states and propose their application in acoustics devices. By combining Dirac semimetals and topological insulators, they demonstrate reduced backscattering and improved matching of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with interdigital transducers. Through the design and manufacturing of miniaturized phononic crystals on a semi-infinite substrate, they successfully realize valley-locked edge transport for SAWs. This work has important implications for future acoustic information processing, sensing, and manipulation.
