Highly efficient nonlinear optical emission from a subwavelength crystalline silicon cuboid mediated by supercavity mode

Mingcheng Panmai et al.

Summary: The low quantum efficiency of silicon has been a long-standing challenge. In this study, scientists proposed a strategy to modify the carrier dynamics in silicon nanoparticles by exploiting the intrinsic excitation of carriers at high temperatures. They observed a significant improvement in quantum efficiency by injecting dense electron-hole plasma via two-photon-induced absorption.

Resonance-trapped bound states in he continuum in metallic THz metasurfaces

Jiaqi Niu et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the tuning of the coupling coefficient between two metallic split-ring resonators by modeling metals as perfect electric conductors to satisfy a particular condition. Experimental observation of a BIC-induced cloaking effect linked to the dissipation loss of constitutive materials provides an alternative strategy for constructing BICs in metallic metasurfaces.

Strongly resonant silicon slot metasurfaces with symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum

J. F. Algorri et al.

Summary: This work proposes a novel all-dielectric metasurface supporting multipolar resonances and symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BIC). The structure features high Q-factor responses, non-radiating quasi-BIC resonances, and discusses the effect of optical losses in silicon on achievable Q-factor values. The metasurface opens new avenues for research on light-matter interactions in various applications such as nonlinear devices and biological sensors.

Singular systematic phases, transparencies, and invisibilities produced by parity-time-symmetric Thue-Morse optical waveguide networks

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: By studying a one-dimensional parity-time-symmetric Thue-Morse optical-waveguide network family, it was found that the system can produce 15 types of new singular optical properties. The lower symmetry of this optical system compared to other PT-symmetric structures leads to an increase in the quantity and quality of systematic phase, transparency, and invisibility properties.

Photonic Bound States in the Continuum in Si Structures with the Self-Assembled Ge Nanoislands

Sergey A. Dyakov et al.

Summary: Germanium self-assembled nanoislands and quantum dots show great potential for CMOS-compatible optoelectronic integrated circuits, but their photoluminescence intensity is currently lacking. Experimental results demonstrate that the photoluminescence of Ge nanoislands in silicon photonic crystal slabs with hexagonal lattice can be dramatically enhanced, paving the way for a new class of optoelectronic components compatible with silicon technology.

Ultrawide photonic band gaps with the limit of gap-midgap ratio of 200% produced from complete-connected networks

Xiaohui Xu et al.

Summary: A one-dimensional complete-connected network is designed to investigate its extraordinary optical property for producing an ultrawide photonic band gap. Analytical formulas are derived for the gap-midgap ratio of the largest PBGs created by CCNs and the general transmission formula for 1D CCNs. This network has wide applications in designing optical filters, devices with large PBGs, and optical communication devices.

Quasi-bound states in the continuum in metal complementary periodic cross-shaped resonators at terahertz frequencies

Dejun Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs) in free-standing metal complementary periodic cross-shaped resonators (CPCRs) at terahertz frequencies. By breaking mirror symmetry through reducing the length of one arm in CPCRs, the Q-factor of the quasi-BIC can reach a significantly high value of 102. The high Q-factor is mainly determined by material loss rather than radiative loss, enabling the exploration of ultra-narrowband filters and ultra-sensitive sensors at terahertz frequencies.

A Bifunctional Silicon Dielectric Metasurface Based on Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum

Jianan Wang et al.

Summary: Quasi-bound states in the continuum offer an effective way to improve metasurface performance, with low loss and polarization tunability. The proposed bifunctional resonant metasurface, based on this theory, demonstrates extreme performance and chirality under different incident light conditions.
