A cortical cell ensemble in the posterior parietal cortex controls past experience-dependent memory updating

Akinobu Suzuki et al.

Summary: Animals refer to past experiences when processing current sensory inputs, and update previous memories through neural networks. This study reveals that a cellular ensemble in the posterior parietal cortex of mice interacts with the anterior cingulate cortex through a circuit to update memory by incorporating past and current information.

Development of a neural probe integrated with high-efficiency MicroLEDs for in vivo application

Hiroki Yasunaga et al.

Summary: A neural probe with MicroLEDs and neural electrodes was fabricated for optogenetic application, successfully recording local field potentials. The MicroLEDs showed consistent current-voltage characteristics and sufficient light output for manipulating neural activity. Simulation of light distribution in brain tissue and investigation of LED temperature increase led to valuable insights for improving efficiency.

Remote control of neural function by X-ray-induced scintillation

Takanori Matsubara et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrated the use of inorganic scintillators to remotely control neural functions in living animals through X-ray irradiation. The injectable scintillator microparticles were shown to effectively activate and inhibit midbrain dopamine neurons in freely moving mice, modulating behavior bidirectionally. This study highlights the potential of scintillator-mediated optogenetics for minimally invasive, wireless control of cellular functions at various tissue depths in biological and medical research.

Micro-LED Array-Based Photo-Stimulation Devices for Optogenetics in Rat and Macaque Monkey Brains

Yasumi Ohta et al.

Summary: A study developed micro-LED array devices to achieve large-area photo-stimulation in the brain, successfully stimulating the prefrontal cortex and ventral tegmental area. Experiments on rats and macaque monkeys demonstrated the effectiveness of these devices in inducing neurochemical responses.
