Topological Photonic Crystals: Physics, Designs, and Applications

Guo-Jing Tang et al.

Summary: Recent research in topological photonics has made significant progress in proposing and realizing novel topological phenomena, designing and fabricating high-performance photonic devices. Photonic crystals, as a powerful platform for controlling the flow of light, have been widely used to reveal different topological phases of light and demonstrate topological photonic functionalities. Furthermore, topological photonic crystals have found applications in both passive and active photonics.

Silicon Photonic Integrated Circuits for Soliton Based Long Haul Optical Communication

Alvaro Moscoso-Martir et al.

Summary: We present a silicon photonic transmitter for soliton-based communications that allows interleaving of QPSK and APSK modulated soliton pulses overlapping in both time and frequency domains. By employing the nonlinear Fourier transform, we determine suitable soliton launch conditions and facilitate nonlinear equalization at the receiver. We achieve a spectral efficiency of 0.5 b/s/Hz per polarization over a transmission distance of 5400 km, which is a record for soliton transmission over such long distances. Experimental comparisons of linear and nonlinear minimum mean square error and artificial neural network-based equalizers demonstrate the effectiveness of artificial neural networks in this system.

Tailoring the Band Structure of Plexcitonic Crystals by Strong Coupling

Fatemeh Davoodi et al.

Summary: Transition-metal dichalcogenides combined with metals can enhance and tailor light-matter interactions, forming hybrid structures. The coupling between plasmons in plasmonic crystals and excitons in WSe2 results in flat bands, with optical waves exhibiting remarkably low group velocities. These findings have implications for the design of tunable slow-light structures and plexcitonic topological photonic structures.

Pattern-tunable synthetic gauge fields in topological photonic graphene

Zhen-Ting Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a straightforward and effective design approach for photonic topological insulators supporting high quality factors edge states is proposed using pattern-tunable strain-engineering. Chiral strain-engineering creates opposite synthetic gauge fields in two domains resulting in Landau levels with the same energy spacing but different topological numbers. The strain strongly affects the degree of localization of edge states, while the two-domain design stabilizes the strain-induced topological edge state, providing large scalability for various photonics applications.

Valley-dependent corner states in honeycomb photonic crystals without inversion symmetry

Huyen Thanh Phan et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the topological states of honeycomb photonic crystals without inversion symmetry using plane wave expansion and finite element methods. Our findings show that topological corner states appear at 60 degree corners, but are absent at other corners, suggesting a sign flip of valley Chern number at the corner. This research provides an experimentally feasible platform for exploring valley-dependent higher-order topology in photonic systems.

Mapping optical Bloch modes of a plasmonic square lattice in real and reciprocal spaces using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy

Paul H. Bittorf et al.

Summary: The study investigates the interaction of surface plasmon polaritons with a square lattice of holes and the formation of plasmonic Bloch modes. Using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging, the spatio-spectral distribution of optical Bloch modes is imaged in the visible to near infrared spectral ranges, with higher-order Brillouin zones of the plasmonic lattice demonstrated by angle-resolved cathodoluminescence mapping. Complementary techniques such as cathodoluminescence scanning spectroscopy and angle-resolved mapping are employed to uncover the spatial and spectral distribution of optical Bloch modes in real and reciprocal spaces.
