A review on III-V compound semiconductor short wave infrared avalanche photodiodes

Yan Liang et al.

Summary: This article introduces the crucial role of on-chip avalanche photodiodes (APDs) in fully integrated photonics systems, particularly the application of III-V compound APDs in optical fiber communication reception. The improvement of APD performance is achieved through advancements in structural design and material choice. It is necessary to review the evolution and recent developments of III-V compound APDs to understand the current progress in the field, including different types of APDs and potential future directions.

Imaging dynamic exciton interactions and coupling in transition metal dichalcogenides

Torben L. Purz et al.

Summary: TMDs are considered as a potential material platform for quantum information science, and multi-dimensional coherent imaging spectroscopy sheds light on the underlying physics for both MoSe2 monolayers and MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures. The study identifies promising and unfavorable areas for quantum information applications, highlighting the importance of robustness in coherent and incoherent coupling for device applications. The presence of strain and dielectric environment changes does not significantly affect the interlayer exciton lifetimes, supporting TMDs as a next-generation material platform in quantum information science and beyond.

Synthesis and characterization of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides: Recent progress from a vacuum surface science perspective

Kinga Lasek et al.

Summary: Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a diverse group of materials with properties ranging from semiconducting to metallic. Single-layer TMDs exhibit distinct properties compared to multi-layer and bulk materials, especially undergoing significant changes when reduced to a single molecular layer.

Subcycle contact-free nanoscopy of ultrafast interlayer transport in atomically thin heterostructures

M. Plankl et al.

Summary: Ultrafast nano-videography of tunneling processes in insulators is achieved using terahertz near-field microscopy, probing the local polarizability of electron-hole pairs with evanescent terahertz fields with subcycle temporal resolution. This contact-free nanoscopy technique shows potential for studying ultrafast transport processes in a wide range of condensed matter systems, as demonstrated in van der Waals heterobilayers.

Transfer of large-scale two-dimensional semiconductors: challenges and developments

Adam J. Watson et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional materials provide opportunities for exploring fundamental science and applications at atomic thickness limits. The family of 2D semiconductors, particularly the group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), have attracted attention for their potential in high on-off ratio transistors and optoelectronic devices. Methods for transferring 2D films, especially those grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), are crucial for further investigation and improvement of device performance.

Inducing and Probing Localized Excitons in Atomically Thin Semiconductors via Tip-Enhanced Cavity-Spectroscopy

Hyeongwoo Lee et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new approach to induce and probe the emission of localized excitons in atomically thin semiconductors using hybrid-modality cavity-spectroscopy. By placing a WSe2 monolayer on sharp gold tips, the enhanced emission and detection of X-L at room temperature is achieved.

Lock-in detector for accelerated nonlinear imaging

Torben L. Purz et al.

Summary: Replacing the exponentially-weighted-moving-average low-pass filter with a simple-moving-average filter in a lock-in amplifier significantly reduces data acquisition time, enabling accelerated nonlinear imaging with superior signal-to-noise ratio and suppression of extraneous modulations. The box lock-in performs significantly better than conventional lock-in detection for nonlinear imaging applications when a specific condition relating lock-in time constant and modulation frequencies is met. These results suggest that ultrafast and nonlinear imaging can become a new standard for material characterization.

Optical Signatures of Defect Centers in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Pedro Miguel M. C. de Melo et al.

Summary: The study investigates how defects change the properties of 2D materials and how to generate functionalities using these defects. By employing many-body perturbation theory, the optical absorption spectra of defected transition metal dichalcogenides can be obtained. Metal vacancies show a larger set of polarized excitons, making them good candidates as quantum emitters.
