Influence of Optic Cable Construction Parts on Recovery Process after Gamma Irradiation

Zuzana Sarsounova et al.

Summary: Fibre optic cables are widely used in Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems for communication. However, using them in radioactive containment areas, such as in nuclear power plants, presents challenges as the glass used in optical fibres darkens when exposed to radiation. Although radiation resistant optic fibres have been developed to mitigate this issue, their optical properties degrade over time.

Radiation Effects on Pure-Silica Multimode Optical Fibers in the Visible and Near-Infrared Domains: Influence of OH Groups

Cosimo Campanella et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of different hydroxyl group contents in optical fibers on radiation-induced attenuation and tested three fiber samples under X-ray irradiation. Results showed that the hydroxyl group content affected the generation of non-bridging oxygen hole centers and the contribution of self-trapped holes to optical losses.

Radiation resistance of single-mode optical fibres with view to in-reactor applications

P. F. Kashaykin et al.

Summary: This paper compares the radiation resistance of six pure-silica-core single-mode optical fibres from different manufacturers, and finds that metal-coated fibres are suitable for in-vessel applications. The induced optical loss from radiation allows for longer transport fibre lengths in the in-vessel applications. Moreover, the temperature-dependent microbending optical loss in metal-coated fibres is discussed, providing insights into the total induced loss.
