Eyes grow towards mild hyperopia rather than emmetropia in Chinese preschool children

Yingyan Ma et al.

Summary: In preschool children, changes in refraction and refractive components over one year were observed. Loss of lens power in eyes with lower baseline spherical equivalent refraction resulted in hyperopic shifts, while in eyes with higher baseline spherical equivalent refraction, the loss of lens power compared to axial elongation was reduced, leading to myopic shifts. This study highlighted the homeostasis of human refraction and how it leads to a preferred state of mild hyperopia.

Myopia and glaucoma progression among patients with juvenile onset open angle glaucoma: A retrospective follow up study

Franziska G. Rauscher et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for glaucoma progression in juvenile open angle glaucoma (JOAG) patients, particularly the association with myopia. The results showed that myopia was significantly associated with glaucoma progression, with myopic patients being 18 times more likely to progress compared to non-myopic patients. Additionally, baseline myopic refraction and faster myopia development were associated with JOAG progressors.

Anterior Chamber Measurements in Healthy Children: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Optical Coherence Tomography

Budor S. A. Edawaji et al.

Summary: The study used handheld optical coherence tomography to establish anterior chamber measurements in children. It found that anterior chamber width, TML, Schwalbe's line-angle opening distance, and Schwalbe's line-trabecular iris surface area increased with age, while CCT decreased. Girls had significantly smaller anterior chambers than boys, and temporal TML development was greater than nasal TML.

Time trend of axial length and associated factors in 4-and 5-year-old children in Shanghai from 2013 to 2019

Tao Li et al.

Summary: The axial length of 4- and 5-year-old children in Shanghai remained relatively stable from 2013 to 2019. Significant differences were observed in spherical equivalent, horizontal and vertical corneal curvature, height, and weight during this time period. Factors associated with axial length included gender and time spent outdoors for both age groups. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the relationship between axial length elongation and environmental risk factors.
