Evaporative flux method of leaf hydraulic conductance estimation: sources of uncertainty and reporting format recommendation

Xiaoxiao Wang et al.

Summary: Accurate estimation of leaf hydraulic conductance (K-leaf) is crucial for understanding leaf physiological characteristics and function. However, previous studies have shown difficulty in comparing K-leaf values for the same species, indicating the presence of uncertain influencing factors. In this study, we investigated the potential impacts of various factors on K-leaf estimation and provided a format for reporting metadata to improve comparability among studies.

An increase in xylem embolism resistance of grapevine leaves during the growing season is coordinated with stomatal regulation, turgor loss point and intervessel pit membranes

Yonatan Sorek et al.

Summary: The study found that grapevines are able to modify their hydraulic traits over the growing season to achieve lower xylem water potential without compromising gas exchange, leaf turgor, or xylem integrity. Seasonal changes should be taken into account when modeling ecosystem vulnerability to drought or comparing datasets obtained at different phenological stages.

Weak tradeoff between xylem hydraulic efficiency and safety: climatic seasonality matters

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that climate seasonality and drought are key factors for selecting plants with high hydraulic safety and efficiency, acting as ecological filters for species with low efficiency and safety.

Leaf anatomical characteristics are less important than leaf biochemical properties in determining photosynthesis responses to nitrogen top-dressing

Dongliang Xiong et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of N supply on leaf anatomical, biochemical, and photosynthetic features in tobacco, revealing that high N treatment led to enhanced photosynthesis due to increased CO2 diffusion conductance and photosynthetic biochemical capacity. The increase in gm in leaves treated with high N was related to changes in leaf anatomy, but the rapid response to N top-dressing could not be fully explained by leaf anatomical modifications.
