Numerical investigation on ultimate strength of sandwich box girders under vertical bending and torsion

Qiang Zhong et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the ultimate strength of sandwich box girders under vertical bending and torsion, finding that the designed sandwich box girders have a higher ultimate strength than the prototype stiffened box girder, with a maximum increase of 21.8% under sagging conditions. In addition, an increase in face plate thickness and a decrease in web plate thickness lead to an increase in warping stress in the sandwich box girders, resulting in a reduction in ultimate bearing capacity.

Crashworthiness optimization method for sandwich plate structure under impact loading

Tian Ali et al.

Summary: A composite sandwich plate structure (SPS) is designed to improve the crashworthiness of ships. A three-stage optimization method is proposed to reduce the number of collision simulations and improve the efficiency of crashworthiness optimization. The results allow for the determination of the structure with the best crashworthiness.

Ultimate strength behavior of laser-welded web-core sandwich plates under in-plane compression

Qiang Zhong et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the ultimate strength behavior of laser-welded web-core sandwich plates under in-plane compression, taking into account geometric and material nonlinearities as well as various factors such as initial deflections, boundary conditions, laser weld rotation stiffness, and transverse shear stiffness. The results show that contact between web plates and face plates in the joints, as well as a smaller root gap, increase the ultimate strength of the sandwich plates.
