A machine learning-based method for prediction of ship performance in ice: Part I. ice resistance

Qianyang Sun et al.

Summary: This study focuses on using suitable ship and ice parameters to design an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for estimating ship resistance in ice-covered water. A reliable model is developed by collecting ice resistance test data from ship sea trials and model test measurements to train the neural network. Different combinations of ship design parameters and ice mechanic properties are explored, and several algorithms are tested and compared to select a good resistance prediction model. The study shows that the ANN can accurately predict ice resistance and outperform conventional semiempirical formulas used in polar ship design.
